I'd say if you had some kind of outboard pre amp or some kind of sound enhancer you could get an overall kind of closeness at a gig with it coming thru a nice PA. As you know the two sound somewhat different. That Antigua - I would think has the Fender sig sound to it and trying to change it may not be easy. The MM - the good old ones have a really nice sound also. I'm not real crazy about the Rays of today. They are hit and miss big time. Others may disagree but I've had several and go by what I've experienced with them. Maybe I was doing something wrong but the MM's were a bit disappointing for me. You should go after the old sounding MM tone I think. I say there's a difference.

So... as I listened to the song you posted -- the sound of the bass (to me) in that mix sounds very close to a Jazz bass and not a P bass. Why not just get a Jazz ?

Thanks and yeah I bought this bass because its amazing. I play punk and its perfect for it. But I'm starting a ska band and think that a less aggressive sound would help.

You'd probably be able to get the Sting Ray sound with a Fender Blacktop P Bass..... (dual Humbuckers)
I think it wouldn't be easy to get the sound you're looking for with the with the Anigua P Bass.. Just my opinion.

Suggest either the Fender Original P-Bass pickup, or the Seymour Duncan SPB3 "Quarter Pounder" and they both cost about the same thing. Probably the Fender would be better as the upper mids are brighter. Some of the EMG's might work just as good.

A compact preamp such as the Aguilar OBP-3SK.

Alternatively you can use an active pickup with built-in Preamp like the EMG P system.

Ernie Ball Regular Slinky Stainless strings in med/light gauge.

An extra thick pick.

That is about as close as you'll get with a split coil P-Bass. Even with all that it still won't be quite as close as the Fender BIG BLOCK P-BASS is stock.

Pick an older American Deluxe with a bridge humbucker and active electronics!

a SKA band---- that's all about a really nice Fender sound isn't it????? There's a good Ska band here and the bass player gets this really low nice tone that fits exact. He has a Jazz.

If you can find one used try one of these. I had one, and it was a STEAL for the money they charged for them. 18V pre-amp. Could hit the Ray style tone easy as pie and the coil selector switch allowed you to switch from the big powered humbucker to what amounted to two powered single coils slapped together. Very awesome bass. However, I'm a minimalist at heart (likely why I play a 51RI) and it was all a little wasted on me after the "newness" wore off. I just found one beefy killer tone I liked and never changed it again.

Fender Big Block P Bass...

EDIT: Hahahahah, I see Dave already beat me to this! Good call. This bass really does do the job!

It really was. Just waaaaayyyy too much in the options department for someone like me. It could hit a lot of cool tones. One that I found the absolutely sickest was when it was strung with flats of all things. You could boost the eq just right so that if you played with a piano hammer style technique it would ring like a bell for daaaaayyyyysssss. It was sick.

Always struck me that if you were in a goth metal band that not only would the looks be killer, but the fact that you could do things like that would really move it out of a traditional bass role and give you the option of doing really cool things during intros, bridges, or outros. Again, not much real world application for a guy in the types of bands I work in, but definitely an instrument that was a steal for the money at the time. It was a lot of electronics in a sharp looking dependable package.

I't's a shame Fender discontinued it.....I guess they were making way for or relpacing it with the Black top
which did get a very good review earlier this year in Bass Guitar Magazine...... still the Big block P bass was a nice instrument.. :)
