It depends on the color of the bass. I have two P Basses (one Fender, one Squier) and one Squier Tele at the moment that have white pickguards. One or two of them would probably look better with tortoise shell or black, but I don't look at that stuff while playing and it's not at the top of things to do/spend money on right now.

That said, usually black or tortoise shell catch my eye the most.

I like to use black or white pickguards. I especially like to use black when its a blue or red bass.

The 70's child in me loves B/W/B. However, I've grown to love the simplicity of the single ply Black "bakelite" guard on my 51RI. FWIW, It's pretty hard to make a P bass look bad.

I have two P-Basses in sunburst with the gold anodized pickguard and they look very cool.

It definately depends on the color of the body. My favorite is maple fretboard, black body, and a black pickguard. I also have a honey blonde Highway One P-bass with a tort pickguard on that. Blonde/white colors with rosewood fretboards look good with tort.

True. Even when their finish is half worn off they still look good to me.

Do you have a pic of it to share, Classe2? I imagine gold and black would look really good.

Zod, that black with maple 'board P Bass is a beauty. The black definitely looks better with an all maple neck. :)

Just to give you an idea about black with a gold pickguard:
Fender Deluxe P Bass Special.

and a Fender American Deluxe Precision.

Another good looking combination. Glad I'm not shopping for basses right now.

On my Sting bass I wasn't in love with the massive amount of white pickguard so I purchased a black one. It looks great to me now. I've also made it my #1 instrument for gigs.
