Hi Gang. I recently bought a 1966 P-Bass neck as the first step in a new project. It sounds great, feels great, and certainly looks great! My only slight worry is the truss rod. The adjustment nut is already screwed into the neck close to 1/8". Is this signs of a possible problem? I currently have the neck fitted up to a bass and the action is reasonable, but it could be lower. I'm a little nervous about adjusting the nut up any further though. Any and all advice appreciated. Rock on!

Probably would not hurt to try an adjustment. This adjustment is at the base of the neck correct?

Yes. I've done a bit of tweaking on guitar, but not on bass. Is it best to slacken the strings before adjusting the truss rod? Thanks. :D

Adjusting the rod with the strings below pitch can leave a finish hump on the neck, usually behind the 5th fret. This can also happen if you are at full pitch, but go too fast turning the nut.

I'm not sure about the truss rod. My guess would be..as long as it works, it's ok.

See the GARY WILLIS setup guide online and follow the instructions about how to put pressure on the neck while tightening the nut explicitly! "Hand, Knee, Foot!" It takes your whole body practically! This tip alone makes going through the setup guide worthwhile and is the least stressful on the truss rod, rod threads and truss rod nut. http://www.garywillis.com/pages/bass/bassmanual/trussrod3.html In fact the entire setup guide (and in fact his entire online assortment of helpers) is pretty much golden and FREE.

Loosening all the strings is not a good idea under any circumstances I can think of unless you have to do some repair of some sort. Once you remove them all simultaneously you are probably looking at a more involved setup process to get it back to exactly where it was before you removed them all. I think it is best to keep normal tension on the truss rod at all times. Just my opinion, some people remove them or loosen them up routinely, but I think stressing the neck support system like that is probably not for the best on a routine basis. Any truss rod nut turns should be done in stages of no more than 1/4 turn per tweak in a 24 hour period.
