I was being helpful, brotherdave was being a smartass, stroker was being, well, stroker. The Bassopotomus is in a submarine and linnin was watching movies again.

Yes, strings are a personal thing, you'll find a lot of opinions. As you progress you'll find a lot of sounds yopu'd like to make, then you'll need another bass and then another and then another.

Just like the rest of us'

As I've said before, when asked why I need so many basses my answer is that I don't need that many basses but I do need the different strings on them.

I currently use three different sets of flats but only one set of rounds. I might change one of them to Roto rounds cuz Stoker is such a good salesman. Buying new strings every month or two isn't appealing to me which is why I use the rounds I use, but I suppose I can try the Rotos again and see what happens this time. I wonder how they'd sound on an active?

I said I wouldn't buy another bass. Well...
My new '62 reissue Sunburst P-Bass is a thing of beauty, pure butter!
The stock Fender rounds sound really good. However, I'm thinkin' of going to flats (Jamerson!). Will the added tension require a neck adjustment? I know this question has been covered before somewhere. I'm lazy. Will y'all chime in here on this?
Are there flats out there that create negligible extra tension?

Thomsstik-Infeld has low tension. I tried Rotosound flatwounds and only used them for a month. I was afraid they'd damage the neck.

I do like the Rotosound rounds, they have their own personality. I have a set that will end up on one of my basses soon, as soon as i decide to take the time to do it.

You're right brotherdave, we need mustiple bass guitars so we can use different strings, lmao! That's what I'm gonna tell my wife!

+1 Thomastic-Infeld Jazz Flats are the very best in flatwound bass strings with a pure nickel wrap and great tone. They are made in Vienna, Austria and are damned expensive. I keep my '76 Precision strung with T-I flats. They last for years.

I go between Fender Flats (on my fretless) & Rotosound Rotobass 45's & DR Fat beams on my fretted basses........... Prefer the Fat Beams ...I try to treat myself to a set when I can but they can be pricey (especially here in Canada)...... & when I'm in a tight spot
& Rotobass 45's are not available I'll grab a set of Fender 7250M's 105-45......... they do the job.

Any string set change will usually require truss rod, intonation and saddle height adjustments. The only way around that is to stick to the exact same set every string change and change the set out one string at a time. If you pull all four strings off you are probably going to have to make more sweeping adjustments than you would otherwise and I don't recommend that be done routinely because the neck needs tension on it to remain stable. Even changes in things you can't control such as weather will necessitate minor adjustments even though you haven't changed string sets.

Regarding the previously referenced Thomastik-Infeld JF344 Jazz Flats, they have a full-range tone with more sustain when compared to traditional flats. The tension is so low that in my case it takes me a little getting used to. The familiar vintage flatwound thump of Motown/Stax/Volt doesn't live in them. They sound to me more like groundwounds, but actually have a tone all their own and it is a good one.

Also as a finger style player, switching between an instrument with TI Jazz Flats and a second one setup with about anything else I tend to overplay the Jazz Flats or underplay the other set for a moment. This is possibly why some people who use Jazz Flats seem to use them exclusively. I know of no other string of any sort with such low tension and frankly it takes a little time to adjust to them for me.

Jazz Flats sound really good played with a pick, and they are the only flat set I know that I can say that about. The other flat sets can sound clicky when picked, but not the Jazz Flats.

The Jazz Flats have always been expensive but due to the strength of the Euro against the US Dollar they are now into ludicrous territory with a list price of 129.00 US Dollars per set. That works out to costing more PER STRING than you'd pay for a set of about anything else. But since they last and last and last and are never prone to breaking due the low tension the current street price of 70 US Dollars per set makes them actually more economical in the long run as they can outlast 5, 10 or more sets of about anything else, except another TI set I use.

TI makes numerous other bass sets. I've tried the IN344 Infeld Superalloy and the EB344 Thomastik-Infeld Power Bass. Of those two sets the Power Bass set is my favorite set of any sort and currently the only round I use. They also last indefinitely! The Superalloy is nothing special at all with a tone, feel and output volume that is equal to many others (D'Addario/Fender/GHS/etc) that cost much less. To me the Power Bass set has no equal and is the one string I can not do without. Many find the Jazz Flats the best string on the planet but I think the best set for me is the Power Bass.

I am 'on the fence' over which roundwound strings to put on my new Jazz. The month old stock Fenders are about half dead. DR's Marcus Miller "Fat Beams" have great feedback and an excellent reputation for supurb tone.

I've not tried T-I Power Bass strings, but I am leaning in that direction. They also have great feedback and an excellent reputation for supurb tone.

I may start a poll, and let battle begin.
