I have a new P Base. Should I replace the strings that came stock? Are they good a good quality or should I "upgrade"

No offense. Since you've only been playing a short time, I'd leave them on until at least December. In the meantime, you can research what kind of string you'd like to try. If you ask, you'll get a ton of opinions. Personally I like round wound strings. this may sound hypocritical but I'd recommend flat wounds because they last a whole lot longer, and they do sound great.

This is a personal thing that will come as you develop into the bass player you want to be.

None taken!! Thanks for the advise! I had a customer tell me I should replace the stock ones right away. For Ernie Ball. I just wanted to ask you guys!!

Thanks!

+1 What oxfan said! Eric, since you are brand new to bass guitar, I would just echo what oxfan stated and play your bass until the stock strings are dead. I keep my Precision strung in flats for a vintage classic rock tone. They are much easier to play and no string screech.

I for one, do not like Ernie Ball anything. Nothing.

I'm really not that loyal to one manufacturer. Using rounds I go through them pretty fast. I like Ernie ball, Rotosound and GHS. whatever is on sale when I'm shopping is what gets bought.

The original strings are Fender 8250M's and they are better than some others I can think of. Some people actually buy them on purpose.

As far as what strings to use that can be a real treasure hunt. I suggest maybe finding a recorded bass tone that has the basic tonal character you like and then find out what that player uses and just buy the same set. So just post the player's name that has the P-Bass sound you like and we will try to figure out what string set that might be.

Ask 100 different bassists about what strings are best and you'll get almost that many different answers. There are literally hundreds of different sets.

I have no problem with Ernie Ball strings myself. Their Regular Slinky bass set is a good choice for modern fusion stuff. Even though I've no need for that particular tone right now I do like them for that and when I do need it for some project then I know where that tone lives. The Rotosound rounds are very similar but I prefer the Ernie Ball.

The suggestion of flats as a second set to try was a good idea. They eliminate the finger squeaks which plagues many beginners.

The problem in trying different sets is that a new setup is usually be required with each different set. It is a good practice to find a set you like and stick to it. That minimizes setup time when a string change is required. Changing to different sets each time gets to be a pretty expensive experiment if you pay a tech to do the setups for you. Once you settle on one string set only very minor tweaks are ever required and you can usually manage that yourself.

 Maybe you should just go ahead and change to flatwounds now, instead of waiting. It sure would be easier on your fingers, and it matches up to the music you like.

What are you using for an amp :?:

You've got a nice rig. This string situation is one of personal preference. In my opinion, stay with 45-100, or so. some sets have a bigger E string. The reason i say this, is, going to heavy strings could cause some headaches. They could mess up your nut and there may be intonation problems.

You could use flats to get the sounds you want, it's your party.

I have these on my Precision.

I have these too, just waiting for me to change them.

and a set of these.

Just trying to decide which bass gets which set.
