I prefer the P-Bass for its tone. Not that there's anything wrong with the J-Bass tone, but it does sound more at home among traditional jazz instrumentations. I love jazz, but I don't play jazz. The P-Bass tone fits my musical tastes which range from rock to folk (with many stops along the way).[/i]

I borrowed a frettless P from a friend for a gig back in 1974. The next day I bought my own. It just fit my hands like it was made for me and me alone. Plus the tone was just what I always wanted to hear coming out of my amp.

I don't own any fender products (yet, I am 14 and I do need to save up), but I do prefer the tone of a P to a J. I've also noticed myself using the neck pickup more than the bridge when playing.

I do my best man. I'm roughly 1/6 of my way to my first P-bass.

A P-bass = fat tone and no pickup decisions. Change your tone with your fingers. It's all about keeping it simple and utterly solid. Nothing you can't do on a P-bass. And even with small hands, I prefer a P-bass neck. Even a C neck is better than an A, to me.

I've had a Brand new American Highway One P-Bass for a couple weeks now. I love the feel & the E & A strings sound. The D string is neutral. But the G string I have an issue with. When playing in some songs I do a lot of walking bass (country) and like to get up to a higher octave by playing up the G string. I just isn't loud enough! It's like the pickup isn't getting the full tone out of the string. I've raised that end of the pickup closer the string & helped some but not enough. One guitarist who is 60 & has played for 40 says that is the 'nature of the beast'. Would you agree. I really like the bass but I am having some problems also getting a good tone. Maybe I am not used to it yet, but it just seems hot (except for the G).

Other basses:
Mexican Jazz Fretless
ESP LTD B-304
Schecter 8 String
Epihone El Capitan Acoustic Electric

Any suggestions before I go try another or get a fretted Jazz? Maybe a 5 String? Maybe just get some setup help?

UPDATE: I just got back from the music store & I exchanged for a Highway One Jazz Bass. I like the tone much better & the neck too. :D

Hmmm...I don't have that problem, but I've got Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickups in my Ps -- they seem to speak pretty consistently from string to string, and I never hesitate to continue a run across strings or up frets.

Try putting on fresh strings, and make sure they're good strings. Some brands are known to have dead strings even new ones.

I recommend DR stirngs, theyr'e really good, great tone, long sustain and good balance between strings.

I tried, Rotosound, Ernie Ball, Fender, Elixir and DR and so far my favourite is DR.

I played my friends acoustic guitar once and found that some of the strings were weaker, it was bad, I thought that there something wrong with the pick ups, he almost returned for warranty repair, but decided to change the strings before the repair, since he needed new strings on them anyway. And VOILA! The problem was solveds. It was just dead strings.

Sounds more like a pickup adjustment issue to me - never had a quiet string on any Fender I've owned. Quiet notes occasionally, yes, particularly around 5/6/7 on the G, amd most often on 51 style Precisions.

Glad you got it resolved. I was going to say, sounds like the P-bass had a bad pickup. I've owned and played lots of Precisions and none have had that issue. They sound fat from bottom to top.
