Always wanted a good P-bass since one of my best friends in high school had a fretless which he got new in the mid-70's (wonder what happened to that one... it was priceless then, I thought - Bill Arnica, you out there?).

A guy I worked with gave me a Squire P-bassII (thanks, Colin Saunders!) which I really got started seriously playing bass with. I bought a 51 reissue which I sometimes love sometimes not-so-much, but it's cool. I got this weird hybrid Squire P-bass V at a pawn shop which I really liked the finish (pearl) and the neck was AWESOME but the electronics, which for some gawdawful reason included squire J-bass four string pickups, where horrible. I replaced part by part over time and ordered some 5 string quarter-pounder seymore duncan pups for it, but they kept gettin back-ordered. Frustrated, I got a deal on a deluxe standard (mexican) Jazz V. Both me and my mates from various bands like the sound of the Jazz.... I just never fell in love with it... it's heavy and the neck is uncomfortably both wide and big around, which kind of defeats one of the features of the J basses, the thinner neck - it sure isnt in this 5 string model!!! I got one of the Squire vintage modified J basses, and while the neck is nice and thin and it's playable and the thing looks cool.... never fell in love with it either, for whatever reason.

Finally broke down and bought an American Standard Precision V and I love it (got a good financing offer I couldnt refuse). I've been dreaming and scheming to get one of these for some time now, I think I wanted the looks, the name, and sound. Well, the looks are....ok.... wish they had the sunburst in the maple neck; I ended up getting the candy cola which is ok. The sound is classic P-bass, solid, dependable.... and pretty 'vanilla'. Familiar but unexciting. But the feel and playability of this thing, which is completely subtle and unexplainable, is just totally there for me. I love it.

I'm finding that for sound, the amp probably has more to do with it than the bass, and fiddling with the knobs. I am a definite convert to tube amps. I got a peavey VB-2 head that makes any bass sound wonderful, and I can choose 410 or 15" cabs to get a particular sound for different purposes.

But the feel, the elusive feel of the P basses, THATS why I love em.

peace out, Jah Buck

I played other basses (including Jazz) for many years before I discovered the Precision. I can only echo what others have said: more presence, more punch, more THERE. I like my bass playing to lock into the bass drum and it seems like the J just doesn't do it like the P.

True story: I had a steady gig as the bass player for a honky tonk band, playing my Classic '50s with a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound and Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats (the best sounding combination, in my opinion) and I decided to try out my fretless Jazz at a gig. During the break the singer and the lead player both independently came over to me and said, "that J doesn't cut it." For what it's worth, they weren't talking about the intonation! But that wasn't as bad as another time, when I pulled out another bass during sound check and was sent home to get the Classic '50s.

I have to agree with the majority here. Feel (neck, weight and balance) and Tone. For what I play it's just the best match. But that makes sense. Those are probably the most common reasons for deciding which bass to get so if the P-bass matches your style you're likely to find yourself here expressing that.

I have both a four and a five string PB. The five is my favorite. I also have a Rosco Beck signature which is based more on the Jazz. The feel is a lot different but still nice and the range of tones is out of this world. Unfortunately there are so many controls that affect the tone it's a lot of work to play live unless you use one tone setting all night long. I use it mostly for practicing at home. So yes, I also agree on the simplicity of the P-bass making it the best choice.

Because 30 years ago I was able to buy it used for " $75.00 - No strings attached" Not a bad price for a '65. My 80 year old grandfather lived in the same town as the guy who ran the ad...went to the guys house paid him , put the bass on a greyhound bus, My dad and I met the bus out in the middle of nowhere at a crossroads...took delivery..sure enough..no strings. But still a heck of a deal. Thanks Dad and Gramps. I will treasure this Precision always.

As to your signature: do what I did and order a nice fretless neck from Warmoth. My fretless P is the Sch$&W%$^tz.

I prefer the P-body shape when it's played without strap, sitting on a chair.
As a whole the body seems to feel a bit sturdier.
P-pickups are a bit more punchy than J's.
J's seem to 'sing' and sigh slightly better.

For some reason I can't post pics here, but here's a link to the fretless P.

I'm in Nacogdoches, but I lived in Houston in the mid-80s. I still have friends there.

Thanks for posting it. I'm afraid I don't know Rob Dale.
