Just because. I don't have a good answer other than I just like them better, though I am gassing for a J-bass now.

The P-Bass just has a punch I can't get with a J-Bass. The J has a deep warm sound. That's great for when I'm playing some of the jazzier-bluesy stuff I do. I saw an add for a J, saying it's "the one" for finger style playing, But for me, the P just has better mid range and bite that suits my style well. I can get a good pick-like sound using my fingers.

I find the P has more bass (i.e. more bottem end). It "booms" where the Jazz "burps" so to speak. The J bass has a nice growl, however. That's why I like both, as each serves its purpose.

First, the P-bass came first. Second, The P-bass, has a better neck, than the Jazz. Yes, the Jazz bass, does have a smaller neck width, but it's neck width isn't consistence. Whereas, if you get one of those P-basses, with the 1.625 width, it feels better. Third, the tone of the P-bass, is much solid, than a Jazz. Don't get me wrong, I do like the sound of a sharp Jazz Bass, but, it is more brighter than a P. Now, the part of my story comes from owning about five J's, I just can't stand the body of the Jazz Bass. Feels like a "star" to me. Doesn't fit in my lap, the way a P-bass does. the P, has that countoured body, like a Strat. All and all, both of Leo's creations are the Best, but everybody had their own "feel" about their bass. How it plays, sounds, looks, and feels. And, believe me what I tell you, not all P-basses, are cool either. The early 50's models were big. Then the late 50's and the early 60's pre-CBS P-basses, are the 'joint". Some in the 70's, had the "juice", and then, in the 80's, well, enough said. PM

The tone.

The necks are more comfortable for me.

With just the one split coil pickup, one vol., and one tone they are a lot easier to mod/repair.

Well, I can't really describe that well. The body on the Precision feels lighter to me, but to my other friend Jazz basses are lighter. I personally like the sound more, because the jazzy sound I would probably never use. Just my opinion. Both of them are wonderful basses, especially if its an actual Fender instead of a Squier. Not dissing any of them.

I like the tone they produce. what got me into them is that many of my favourite bass players play precisions.

I owned at least 5 jazz basses, different years, and they all had different "feels" to them. The P-bass, on the other hand, for the exception of those" large neck "ones, had the same feel , all the time. Plus, I like the body to the P-bass. Now saying that , The sound of the P-bass, "you can't beat it , with a stick"! Bell -Bottom! Now, I understand why Jamerson, picked one, and stayed with it, for 25 yrs. A Jazz Bass, has it's place among the basses. For slapping and pucking, the Jazz has it's place. But, when it comes down to funkin and driving a band, The good ole P-bass, can't be beat! Now, I would like to add, The other (Fender), The Musicman Stingray, comes real close to the P-bass also. Really, a good bassist, would need all three, to have, all the " Fender bass sounds". :D

I like the low end thump of a P-Bass and I like the wider neck, My main P-Bass is a 87 MIJ and it has the vintage 1.750 neck, I like it, I do have a MIM 96 Jazz that's pretty easy to play, it just depends on the bass

I have own both at one time, I even own a telecaster bass along with these other two. I just like the simple controls and the P sound over the other Fender Basses, I quess it personal taste myself~!!!! 8)

It's all been said already but I am just constantly amazed with the versatility of the P-Bass. I just got done with a 5 week run of a musical called Batboy that spanned rock, funk, slap, ballad and country styles on the bass. Just a simple roll off of the Tone knob put me in the right spot for some nice round tone (im using flatwounds btw) for the ballad numbers. Tone knob rolled up gave a great attack for the rock and slap sections of the show. Granted a large part of that is from the amp as well but once that is set I was able to sit back and enjoy playing, it's a very fun show by the way if anyone has a chance to play it.

To me, P-Bass= solid feel, versatile & excellent punchy sound...plus they look cool

I prefer the p-bass because of its warm and sharp tone , as someone said before , its more comfortable , easier to repair if needed , and i just like playing with it more :D .
