Gents,
Does Fender corp. generally select the more attractive wood grain solid bodies for the sunburst and clear or transluscent finishes?
Generally do customers prefer wide-spaced wood grains or tight close-spaced grain on alder bodies?
Lastly, any thoughts on those straight black lines in the wood sometimes running across the natural grain lines? I've been told these lines are natural mineral stains in the wood.
Please weigh in!

Well, i know for sure that on their deluxe models they hand pick the wood for its grain appeal. Sometimes you get a piece you like and other times you have to keep looking. As far as tonal impact from grain (and this is personal experience not fact) the grain has very little effect on the sound. Its more of a question of looks. But if you have an ear like eric johnson, you may notice slightly more sustain with a heavy piece of wood that has alot of grain. Wood weight has a BIG effect on tone.

Heavy=denser wood=brighter sounding very poppy
Lighter=less dense=warmer sound and usually more mid range.

Hope that helps
