You could get a grip-strengenthener, the sell them at sporting good stores. They actually help you to limber up your fingers as well as adding strength.

Don't overdo it with these things--I know guys that got tendonitis from over-using those things.

When I lived with my parents we had one of those hand grip exercise things--it worked with the whole had--but I used to use it while I was on the phone, and it helped my fingers build up strength with less tension on them.

There really isn't any easy way. You just have to keep practicing.

You're right in saying you can overdo it, but that's pretty much true with anything.

Rockbassist, truer words were never spoken. I wonder how Eric is doing getting his calluses built up.

Two tips I got from my favorite instructor ever might help.

First a free fretting fingers exercise! Press your fingertip pads against your thumb briefly, like half-notes or as if you were playing a scale. Start lightly then increase pressure as you go. Makes a good warm up exercise before playing or for strength building. Work up from rotating evenly finger to finger to skipping around to mix it up. This is suitable for both guitar and bass players. No purchase required.

The second tip was her fingering advice regarding the pinkie (4th) finger and the (3rd) ring finger. Electric bass and guitar are different animals physically. She says that only when playing above the 12th fret do bassists actually need to use the 3rd and 4th fingers separately, otherwise she advises using them together and thinking of them as ONE finger when playing below the 12th fret. This is partly due to human anatomy and partly due to the force required to fret the lower bass notes. When the arm is extended, as to the end of the longer bass neck and you move the ring finger, the pinkie naturally wants to follow the ring finger. It also happens the other way around as the ring finger wants to follow the pinkie when the arm is extended further. It is just the way humans are made. The more the arm is extended the harder it becomes to move them completely independently. These are also the two weakest fingers, so it makes sense to use them as one finger to avoid strain. Why fight nature? Above the 12th fret your arm is not so extended and the pinkie and ring finger are somewhat easier to move independently. Also above the 12th fret the string height become smaller so of course far less finger strength is required to fret the string while the fret spaces themselves become much smaller. Truth be told I sometimes use the 3rd & 4th fingers together as one finger even above the 12th fret also.

Playing became so much easier for me once I adopted this bass fingering method. She only had me play for about 30 seconds before she said, "Does your hand or the fingers of your fretting hand ever hurt?" I had been playing using all 4 fingers independently all up and down the neck for decades before I switched to her suggested fingering method. It eliminated wrist pain and pain in the 3rd and 4th fingers of the fretting hand practically overnight. I consider it one of the best playing tips I ever got.

I can't recommend this book enough. My bass teacher had me pick a copy up when I was about 12 years old or so, and it was very difficult. As the years have gone on and my hands have grown, I've grown from despising to loving this book. It is chock full of complex left hand exercises (which also force your right hand to improve). If you honestly practice just one of the exercises for 15 minutes a day, with a metronome, you will gain tremendous finger independence and become AWESOME. You will be a master of the low frets.

Not trying to make you buy it, either. Check out the first few pages in Amazon's preview window there, and do those exercises first, to make sure it's something you'll like.
