This is my second post. I am a new at the bass. I have an American P Bass. I know this may sound really dumb but my fingers do NOT cooporate with my brain. I cannot strench and bend them they way I need to. Is there an exercise I can do to strench and bend them the way I need them to go.
Thank you for your help!!

Eric

I used to stretch my fingers on my steering wheel when driving. It's hard to describe though but I'm serious AND it works.

You could get a grip-strengenthener, the sell them at sporting good stores. They actually help you to limber up your fingers as well as adding strength.

You are probably using your 'off' hand fingers as a unit, not as individual fingers. It is pretty common, but with slowly and carefully playing scales, using a finger strength trainer, and concentrating on your off hand finger usage; it gets much better and easier. You will always have to stretch and limber up your fingers.

Love the thread title: "One Finger One Fret".

It's like a political slogan:

One Man - One Vote - One Finger - One Fret

  OK, so I'm easily amused.

I'm not quite sure but that was what happened to my mom as well previously.. a physical therapist had her squeeze a ball, and made her weight training

I agree with running scales as a way to "train" your hands. When I started, my teacher had me playing mostly at the 7 - 10 frets while my hand got better. Over time we moved closer to the headstock, and now I can stretch from the 1st fret to the 4th with no problem, and up the neck (?down the neck? I get it confused) a little ways, I can now S-T-R-E-T-C-H 5 frets mostly okay. That's on my 34" scale Fenders. On my 35" scale Ibanez (which I rarely play), I can't stretch 4 frets by the headstock, and have doubts that I ever will be able to do so very well.

Anyway, PLAYING is the best way to strengthen your hands and fingers. Do warm them up a bit first, and be sure to monitor how your wrists feel so you don't overdo it.

If playing bass taught me anything, it's patience. As much time as you need to go from plateau to plateau is exactly how long it takes. Don't set unrealistic goals and understand that progress is in the small things.

when stretching on the steering wheel-- put you hands on the outer round lip of the wheel--- place your thumbs flat on the outside edge like you are picking up a plate on the outside rim of it without touching the flat surface of the plate- then form your hands surrounding the outer edge first with your index finger-- make the outer round edge touch your thumb, the web of skin leading up to your index finger untill that whole portion of your hand is stretched out flat against and around the ring of the wheel . Do it with all your fingers. Does that make sense? It's somewhat hard to describe.
