Hi -
I need a replacement machine head for my Squier Silver Series P-bass

the problem is that the ferrules and headstock holes are too small for the mexican P bass machine heads I've got.

can anyone recommend a suitable (& compatible) replacement which won't mean enlarging the existing holes in my headstock?

I'm aware that I could cannibalise parts from a different silver series bass but I kinda need a more immediate solution.

Thanks a lot!
J

Gads that is a bummer. Expanding holes to the 11/16ths standard size is possibly the best option if you can't find the right tuners. The originals are probably proprietary parts and while they may have been made by Gotoh or Cort (or even by Gotoh for Cort) under OEM contract. Neither Gotoh nor Cort makes them available aftermarket so far as I know. But some of the Cort tuners are available as Fender Parts. So, it is possible you might could order them as a Fender/Squier part. However, to do that you'd need the parts list so you have the right part number.

To get the parts list/specs/control wiring etc, contact Fender Consumer Relations. Here is the link to initiate that: http://www.fender.com/support/articles/contact-consumer-relations Be sure to include make, model and serial. A photo won't hurt either. There is no guarantee that you can get it, just possibly. Once you have the part number try ordering the correct part. If your local dealer isn't cooperative then contact Darren Riley and see if he can order them or if he has the part via: http://www.darrenriley.com/main.html And yes he ships worldwide.

If unable to get the right part then you are left with the expansion option. Expanding the holes evenly isn't as easy as it sounds. The best way is to plug the exiting holes with glued in proper size dowels and after the glue dries re-drill them as precisely centered as possible to 11/16ths using a drill press. If you try to expand the existing holes without plugging them first then one or more will almost certainly be off center from the others. I've seen people try to drill them freehand without plugging and wind up with all four out of line! You possibly could expand them enough by hand filing, which might be more accurate than drilling but depending on your skill and patience even that is iffy.

So try to get the correct part first, if you can't then drop back and punt with the expansion. Good luck!
