I'd like to revert to the original question : "Am I Too Old?"--- Well... yes, you are too old. I'm too old. Pookie is too old. Farn Gnarfler is too old. But if we were not too old we could not ask the question to which the answer is "No, you are not too old." So what fun would all that be? No fun.

I'm another "haven't played in years" type -- over 30 and then I got a guitar and more or less just fooled around for the past few years. But I'm just now getting back into playing out ... and I can say no, you're never too old as long as your objective is to play, have a good time and leave a few people smiling.

A small dose of realism is all you need. No, I'm not going to get involved in some pay-to-play originals band and hope to make it at age 60. Nor am I going to risk my senior management "day job" to cut out early for gigs somewhere. But I'm finding that there are LOTS of people out there our age playing all the time and they're at all kinds of different skill levels. Most are very accepting of someone who's new ... you will want to look for some jams sooner or later where all levels are welcome.

And in the end, I'm probably going to be playing (hopefully) long after I've left corporate life behind. Hmmm ... maybe then I go for that elusive first album and rock stardom!

Just to let y'all know: I'm playing a gig downtown tonight after the Christmas parade. Yeah, and the top's down on the 'Stang.

Attractive young lady to lpdeluxe: "Is that your car? Are you having a mid-life crisis?"

Lpdeluxe: "No, I had my mid-life crisis twenty-some years ago."

Wow Eric--- with your name how could you not be a bass player? I can't figure that one out. Eric Shellhamer ladies and gentlemens.

Just cause you are older don't mean you can't learn bass. It just takes longer so you have to be patient AND if you like doing it--- keep on doing it even if you think you suck. It comes after awhile.

I used to teach big truck driving. Old dogs can learn new tricks. Like I said it just takes a little longer.

I am a 60 year old beginning bass player taking lessons for about 1 and a half years, I pratice about thirty minutes a day for 5-6 days a week. Sometimes it comes easy and sometime not. We have to be patient and have fun while we trek on. Probably ca count on a period of three to five years to be gig ready depending on ability and time put forth. I am so glad I started, just wish I had done it a lot sooner

You are never too old, unless you can't move your hands and fingers anymore!

you are never too old but you might want to take a year long break to re-charge your batteries and then come back fresh and ready to go at it again. I think that's good psycho- lojjie. :D

Dear, Dear Eric.........YOU ARE NEVER "TOO OLDE". As long as you are genuinely enjoying playing....Rock 'till you drop' olde son!!

I am 62 years old, recently recovered from throat cancer and still a gigging musician!! I play acoustic guitar & my one man band at weekends and making a decent income from it, but also really enjoying playing bass with an originals band (though lots of rehearsals as we're not quite gig ready yet).......here's the point........If you fancy playing and you are having fun and find it rewarding for the inner soul too, age doesn't matter, it's of no concern at all..................just DO IT!! and enjoy!!!!

Brian :P

I'm 57 and still playing and the girls come up and dance in front of me. How's that for being too old? I figure I've got some years left in me still.

Too old to learn? Forty nine isn't even old enough to qualify for the old farts bass learners association. Remember how old you thought YOUR parents were? Ha! Now it is your kid's turn - LOL. Enjoy your bass, I am sure it will be a great experience for you and very, very, enjoyable for many years. It just soothes the soul. I will be like Les Paul in one respect, I will play until I die - for the personal enjoyment of it. Hope you will feel the same way.

Enjoy!!

Eric, welcome to the club. My primary instrument is drums. I've dabled with bass on and off for years. I would occasionally play a song in different bands over the years, playing mostly roots and octaves.

About two years ago at age 51 I got serious about becoming a "real" bassist. I took lessons and now can hang pretty tough on bass. I'm going to be playing bass in a blues band very soon, I'm pretty excited about it.

So no, you are not too old.

You're about the age of the average, decent bass player. Bass isn't that hard anyway.
