Wow Eric--- with your name how could you not be a bass player? I can't figure that one out. Eric Shellhamer ladies and gentlemens.

Just cause you are older don't mean you can't learn bass. It just takes longer so you have to be patient AND if you like doing it--- keep on doing it even if you think you suck. It comes after awhile.

I used to teach big truck driving. Old dogs can learn new tricks. Like I said it just takes a little longer.

THANKS FOR YOUR KIND WORDS!!

Dude, Keep on rockin'. I'm in the US Navy and have a young son and a pregnant wife and am 5000 miles away from the rest of my family. I don't have a bass here and yearn to play every day. Sir, I am envious.

I am 44 this month, and I started getting serious with the bass about two years ago. Granted, I've been a drummer for 30 years, and have flirted around a bit with guitar and bass off and on, but I couldn't really ever do anything on either. Funny, I think my age now might be an advantage to my learning bass. I bought a bass about ten years ago, and tried to learn, but did'nt get anywhere. I got rid of the bass in short order. This time around, I'm making really good progress. I've discovered that I have a good "ear", and can put on a song and figure it out fairly quick. I've gotten very comfortable with the instrument, and like was said before, it's almost like an extension of myself when I play. It took me a while to figure out what bass I really prefer (if I'm a P or J guy) :) but I'm settled on a new American Std. Precision, and I just love it. I'm still a drummer, and am playing drums in a hard rock band that is about to start making the local scene. I can definately see the day, though, when I will be playing bass in a performance setting. I don't think it'll be too far off! I was actually a little concerned I was "too old" starting...I feel better now :) Welcome!

This is me at a recent gig, playing in a small group. I learned to play guitar at age 28, started on harmonica at 35, picked up bass at 40, got my first Dobro at 43, and I have gigged on all of them, everything from coffee houses to dance halls to theatrical productions.

Yeah, I have arthritis in my hands, and I play sitting down, but it's still fun at 70. My current project is working up pop material from the past (everything from Ain't Misbehavin' to Girl from Ipanema)

Am I too old to learn new music? Why don't you ask my partner in this madness, who turned 81 recently?

Some things get difficult: I had to replace my 5-speed Toyota Matrix because I couldn't use a clutch any more...so I now drive a red Mustang convertible with an automatic.

Old ain't dead.

Thanks. I'm loving it in the same way I love playing bass.

Are any of us too old? My current lineup is the 81-year-old guitarist/lead singer, me on bass, and my lady friend who took piano lessons as a child and signed up for percussion lessons a year and a half ago at 63, on congas, bongos, snare, high-hat, washboard, afuche cabasa and you-name-it. After two lessons, she was sitting in with the local jazzers (she asks me, "do you think I'm any good?" I always reply, "how many times have **I** been asked to sit in with them?" None, that's how many"). Oh yeah, and the Jive Sisters, whose combined ages are less than that of any one of us others.

I've been around the barn a few times, and I know it could end tomorrow. Enjoy it while we can.

As long as you can breathe, move your fingers and hold a bass--you are not too old...

You are never too old to learn anything. Despite working full time, having a famliy, and playing in a band, I went back to college at the age of 48. By the time I was 51 I completed a Bachelor's Degree at UMASS, graduated $@! Laude, was inducted into the International Honor Society and the National Society for Leadership and Success. If you want it bad enough you can do it.

Just like previously mentioned. Old is a state of mind! 65 years young here, & now rekindling the fire. Fortunately, the '75 P-Bass & '78 Strat are still in reasonably excellent shape after spending about 30 years doing nothing.

I have played in a working band for years but that was over 35 years ago and I had not touched a guitar since. i am now 64 and recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's but it turns out that playing an instrument, learning or otherwise, is very good therapy to keep the mind working.
You're still a pup, now get in there and start learning! Paul McCartney is like 73 and he still plays bass well. You've got some catching up to do!
