Just bought an American P bass. I am 49 years old. I have tons of desire but never played. My questions is how old is too old to learn the Bass. My kids tell me Im crazy for starting now. But if I dont I know I will regret it in my old age..

I would say it has more to do with your motivation than age. Granted, things were probably easier when I was 13, had no job, and could spend hours and hours every day in my room playing guitar than they would be now, but that's not to say I couldn't learn now. You were motivated enough to buy the bass, find this forum, and state your desire. Sounds like a good start. "Woodshed" yourself if you can, and most importantly, have fun with it! Welcome to the wonderful world of bass!

Welcome to the Forums.

No, you're not too old, unless you convince yourself you are. Take your time, spend some time every day playing. It's a great way to relax. Good move in buying an American, quality instrument.

Remind your kids you're spending their inheritence, that should quiet them down. :D

+1 Agreed and Welcome! 8)

Tell those kids to pipe down or you'll spend more!

Be sure to turn your amp up real loud too! You'll feel much younger the louder you play. Oh yeah, treat your wife like a groupie, she'll like that

You're just being lulled into a false sense of security!

Now, we need to see some pictures and what kind of amp are you using?

You are most definitely NOT too old..Im 4 years older than you are.(hush about that) and started taking lessons for my Strat.. Music has no age..its like anything else the more you want to do well and the harder you work at it the better you will be..personally I plan on being phenomenal when I am even older! Most important thing is have FUN!! I just bought an el cheapo bass to mess around with occasionally when I want to take a strat break...it is a blast! I hope you stick to it and have a great time!

As long as you don't have arthritis in your hands, you can play.

There are two good things about starting when you are older: 1. You can finally afford the gear you really want and 2. Your parents won't yell at you to turn the amp down!

Rock on.

I started in my mid-forties and played my first gig when I was 49 and ended up playing out regularly. You're not too far behind me. You're certainly not too old.

+100!
Now get playing!!!!! :D :D :D (You are allowed to take 15 minutes out to take pics & post them here. If you use Photobucket, after loading the pics, hover the cursor over them to get the drop down menu, and left click on the last choice, "IMG code". Then just paste that in a post here.)

What song are you going to learn first? And go post some musings in that "Why Do You Play Bass" topic! :D :D

Have fun, and PLAY!

You are NEVER too old to learn something new. I've played bass for years & never learned to read music. Listening to some songs it is difficult to hear the bass & get the groove so I decided to learn to read music more or less for time signature. You're never to old to learn if you have the desire to do so.

WOW I am not alone..I am working with a Bass teacher who is older than myself. I am dealing with 1 finger per fret..OUCH and learning the Beatle song "Come together" I practice and hour each night. I WILL post my gear very soon..I LOVE my P BASE its a US version and I feel very comfortable with it.

Sounds like a great song to start with. Your hands and fingers will get used to it soon. Eventually your muscle memory will take over, and you won't even have to look at the neck, strings, or either hand. Get real cozy with your bass, and it'll feel like an extension of you.

Wow Eric--- with your name how could you not be a bass player? I can't figure that one out. Eric Shellhamer ladies and gentlemens.

Just cause you are older don't mean you can't learn bass. It just takes longer so you have to be patient AND if you like doing it--- keep on doing it even if you think you suck. It comes after awhile.

I used to teach big truck driving. Old dogs can learn new tricks. Like I said it just takes a little longer.
