The first bass I ever bought 15 years ago was a 1991 (or there abouts) Fender Squier Edition P-Bass. I always wondered why new Squiers said Squier on the headstock and mine said Fender and then in fine print elsewhere said Squier Edition. I always enjoyed that I was able to buy an inexpensive guitar but no one knew that. I figured Fender just wanted to sell more guitars by using the Fender logo, then later realized they were watering down their brand and started using the Squier logo. However, since it was made in Mexico and the newer low-end Fender's are made in Mexico it got me thinking is my Squier edition Fender more akin to today's Mexican made Fenders than today's Squiers. Anyway, I don't know too much about Fender history, but I was wondering if this Squier edition is any different really than the Squier brand today, and if I am more accurate telling people its a Fender or a Squier.

I see you're getting no replys. I'm no expert, but you've got an early Fender Squire. I'd call Fender's Consumer Relations at:

Telephone: (480) 596-7195
Fax: (480) 367-5262
E-mail: consumerrelations@fender.com

Also Brother Dave is an expert. You might try to contact him also.

based on what I know is they're the same thing... way back in the early days of Squier, they had the Fender logo with a Squier label on them, basically they were made outside the US I'm not sure if it's China or Korea,

here's a link that might help.

Sorry I missed this thread. I thought these were made between 93 and 98. But you say you had one in 91? You sure about that year?

Those instruments with the big solid black Fender silk screened logos and the smaller "Squier Series" decals in a similar location, size and font to today's "Deluxe Series" decal on Fender Deluxe instruments were made in Mexico and were a Fender model with Fender hang tags, Fender manual and a Fender serial number. That instrument was a Fender. Not more Squier than Fender or more Fender than Squier, but a Fender model.

There also was another Fender series that used the exact same solid black Fender logo or "Black Label" as it has come to be known which at the time was marketed as the Fender "Traditional Series" but they did not have a distinuishing series decal such as the "Squier Series" had. Traditional Series models had poplar bodies and less costly hardware than alder bodied Standards while the Squier Series had even less costly Asian sourced parts than the Traditional Series.

So at this time Fender was selling three different Mexican made series P-Basses. The Standard with a silver Fender logo, the Traditional Series with a black Fender logo for about $40 less and the Squier Series with the very same black Fender logo and a small "Squier Series" decal which listed for about $80 less than the Standard.

The similarities in the black labels and the name "Squier" on the small "Squier Series" script decal has over the years led to confusion over whether some Fenders were actually Squiers from which the tiny "Squier Series" decal had been removed. The problem is the Traditional Series didn't get a "Traditional Series" decal. I've gotten emails from people who have had people tell them the instrument they bought new as a Fender back then was a Squier. They in fact did have a Fender Traditional Series but the prejudice against the solid black Fender logo and it's association with the Squier Series seemed to confuse everybody!

So the instrument you describe was a Fender model. All three were! The bodies and necks for all Fender USA and Mexico instruments were being cut at Corona at this time because Fender only had CNC capability in Corona back then. The wood was not the same wood of course, but it was cut on the same machines as the USA instruments.

There has been some misconception over the years about these these Squier Series Fenders and every so often it comes up. You don't see these Black Label instruments nearly as much as you used to in the secondary market and they have actually become sort of scarce. So many Squier Series logos have been scratched off or sanded off that they are even scarcer the past few years than the Tradtional Series ones.

It gets better. There also were some solid black Fender logo instruments made in Japan!
