I have a 2000 sunset orange hot rod pbass, with a maple fingerboard. Great instrument and amazing sound. I've had a few people tell me that that bass with that fingerboard is kind of a rare duck. Anyone know how many were made? Thanks.

You've got a pumpkin bass? Aw, man. Those were cool basses. No idea how many were made, but they were hard to find. Always thought they would have looked great with black pickguards. Any chance you can post a pic? I haven't seen one in awhile. Enjoy!

Sunset Orange Transparent is one of my favorite Fender finishes. Sweet!

To post a photo, first you need to upload it to a third party photo host like photobucket.com or similar. Then once uploaded there you should see an URL for the photo called "A DIRECT LINK." Copy that link. Start a post on the good old Fender Forum and above the box where you type a post click the button that says "Img" and it will insert a tag in your post. Just paste the direct link to your photo in between the two Img tags. Like this:

Neat looking bass. Very nice! That was an upcharge color I think and combined with the maple fretboard which usually was less common means there are not as many of those as say a black body with a rosewood board. However I wouldn't call it or anything much made by FMIC exactly a rare duck and very little of it is actually collectible. Scarce maybe but not rare. The 150 Donald Duck Dunn Japanese Precision Basses are scarce, but there are about 15 of them that keep popping up for sale over and over so you can't say those are actually rare either. Something that is rare would be 1996 Anniversary Commemorative Model Telecaster. Those almost never come up for sale.

That is one color Fender needs to bring back. You are a fortunate man.

What is it brotherdave? You seem to be perplexed or sad, dazed or confused.

Nice picture though!

It is a phenomenal bass. I've owned a bunch including a '76 pbass and a '75 4001. It plays like butta, and sounds great. Most of us know a special bass when we pick it up, this is one. I always liked the way these looked when i saw them back in 2000. At that time people hated the way they looked and didn't like the hot rod idea, so they didn't sell many, especially with a maple fingerboard. From what Brother Dave says, they aren't rare, but man are they scarce. After doing tons of internet searches at all the places you would imagine, and the web in general, I have seen exactly one being sold several years ago. It was on talkbass and people were talking about how rarely they come around. That's what prompted my query.

The maple neck is less common than rosewood on these, but not really rare.

I picked up one of these w/rosewood fingerboard when Fender dumped them and GC sold the last ones off for $499 in their Memorial Day sale back in '02 or so. The last batch of these was in Sunset Orange but there were a few natural ash in there, too. A few maple necks were in this last batch. I think they look much better with this color body.

MSRP was quite high on these at the time, much more than a straight "American" Precision. Not really sure why.

You mention TalkBass, so you've probably read a lot of people don't really like these basses. I have to say I fall in that category. FMIC used a unique pickup set for these that showed up on no other basses (check the parts sheets). It was a low-output P set and a higher-output bridge J pickup to try to make volume balancing possible and the result sort of underwhelmed people as either a P or a J, though the sound with all the pickups on is pretty nice. The V/V/T syndrome is really bad on mine and on the only other one I've played.

Mine has a really beautiful two-piece ash body, though I would have preferred it in natural or blonde.

The funny thing about that Sunset Orange is that it looks really gorgeous at first, but most people seem to get burned out on it, quick. I sure did. That's supposedly common with orange colors, according to industrial psychologists in marketing -- or so I've read.

you are correct about everything bezmotivnik. when this bass came out and for quite a few years after, there was a real attitude toward this model. However in the last few years it's gotten pretty popular especially with pros. now, people rave about the sound. it's a strange world.
