Bothj sound great, but I admit I like the 72 better... thinner neck and much lighter

hey renrat, your '72 looks great too! I like the feel & sound of the Precision's before '75 or so. They seem to get alot heavier around 75-76 or so into the 1980s & for me there is a vibe that the ealier ones have. I am, as you can tell, obcessed with custom colors!

Now THAT'S a lineup of beautiful instruments. I wish I had been smart enough to pick up a few more instruments back in the day... I certainly saw plenty I could have picked up cheap. I't amazes me how much the 70's P basses can sell for. (not that I'll ever sell mine) I recall being told that any Fender made after the CBS buyout was junk and would always be junk. But oh my, if they could have looked forward and seen what happened to Fender after CBS unloaded it. I volunteer at a local Preforming arts center, and we often are asked to rent instruments for the incoming artists, considering the cost and risk of traveling by air with a guitar. When a Fender is requested they pretty much always specify in the rider it has to be a Fender made in the USA... In fact, I have a 73 strat that has been played by "Flo" of "Flo and Eddie" or, more commonly, "The Turtles", and by Don Peake of "The Wrecking Crew". My 83 was played by Art Garfunkel's bass player.

Yes, as you say, the 72 has a feel and a sound that they just don't seem to be able to recreate. I think it's much the same as the very early instruments... they get some age and that age and all the music that has come out of them seems to give them a tone and a feel that you don't find in a new guitar. Maybe it's that living part of these guitars, the wood... or maybe I'm just nuts...

There should be a two-Precision minimum on this forum. I have three...usta have four, but even **I** couldn't justify that. Here's the obligatory pic:

The ash fretless is gone; not shown is the sunburst AV '57.

I think the 1970's Fender's as a whole are selling for good money because some of the people who are older (i'm 50) who's kids are grown & have good jobs & save $$ can spend the money on instuments they remember. I began playing at 14 around 1974. I don't recall the earlier pre CBS instruments & I always liked the large headstock. Alot of the late 60's early 70's changes were looks my 1966 (although post CBS it's before CBS made any production changes) it isn't any different in sound or playability than my 2 1969s the only difference between the '66 & any of the '72s is maple board on the 72's. Of course the change in 1968 to poly finsihes over nitro is a sticking point with alot of people but it doesn't bother me. I enjoy & play all of the P Basses I have no 2 are exacly alike. Enjoy your '72!
