Hi! I just bought a '68 P, with a bow in the neck around 17'fret, that I can't adjust with the truss rod. Is it possible to straighten this part of the neck by placing it under pressure for a longer period of time? Anyone here with this kind of experience??

If I was the owner of a vintage Fender and there was something that needed to be fixed that I didn't know how to do, a good luthier would be contacted to check it out and do the repair. There are ways that the neck could be straightened, and paying someone with the experience and insurance to do it would be money well spent IMO.

Amen, brother. That bass is too precious to try and fix yourself. Get someone who knows what he/she is doing.

+1.
Did you know there was a bow in the neck prior to buying it? That's a 40 year old bass you got there. Any pics?

No, did not know about the neck prior to buying it.. I had a friend checking the bass out for me, but he didn't notice the neck problem.. He's a guitarist.. :P The instrument plays and sounds fantastic, so I really want to get this neck straightened out..! I'll post some pics soon..

Sometimes placing a washer or two in between the truss rod and it's screw gives enough added room for the truss rod to be effective.

Other fixes include:

The neck is manually bent straight and kept under pressure while the truss rod is tightened.

A special neck heater with the neck clamped strategically straight and held that way with shims. What the heater does is allow the glue joint in between the fingerboard and the neck to slip and so, it realigns the fingerboard to a straight position and upon cooling, the glue redries in the desired position. Naturally, the truss rod is adjusted to a more neutral position prior to heating. Sometimes the above washer trick is required for the rod here too.

In the case of a one piece maple neck, premising the washer or manual pressure trick won't work, one must realize that the grain of the neck's wood is going to do what it is going to do and obviously, the neck heater will only straighten the neck out for a maximum of a day or two since there is no glue joint to slip. So, premising none of the above works, the only thing left to try is to remove the frets and do some SERIOUS planing of the fingerboard. But here too, and again, the grain of the wood is going to do what it's going to do so, the warp will probably come back over time.
