Ok now that someone answered my question (Thanks by the way), What kind of strings do you guys suggest? Ive found four types which Im looking into. 1st, are D'Addario Flatwound Chromes. I want to get rid of the slidind noise when I play soft songs at my church, the slightest metallic noise can throw of the entire mood. 2nd are of course the Elixir Nanoweb's because I definately have difficulty installing new strings no matter how hard and carefully I try, one of my friends says he has had the same set for 2 years and they sound still sound great, 3rd is Ernie ball Flatwound group 2's, or last, Rotosound Tru bass 88's. As I said before, I have a Mike Dirnt Fender Precision Bass which I just Installed Seymour Duncan Basslines on. The axe also includes a Badass 2 bridge, is there something better than this? It just is kind of inconvenient in stringinging the thing. (Not as bad as having to remove the neck of the bass to adjust the truss. Anyways, thanks for your opinion. The styles of music I play vary extremely, so Im looking for a set that can hold its own in a gig of hard rock, slap bass, or metal. Yet still has the ability of soft tone to do slow songs. Thanks for reading. Peace.

For Flats I play Fender 9050ML's...got a nice old set on my P with the raised a's in it. I use it for a blues rock project I'm in, sounds amazing. For the rock band I'm in I use DM Skullbusters (nasty steel rounds) in my P bass with 1/4 lbs. in it.

Just got a killer deal on a MIM 60th Anniv. P which arrived yesterday, plays killer and I'm thinking as a nice midground between my other two basses I'm gonna string her up with possibly my favorite set of strings, Fender 7150 Nickel rounds in M guage. Should give me a nice sound alternative for either situation.

I would not suggest flat wounds especially if you play a variety of music. I would adjust the treble on your bass and or your EQ on your amp. Most of the noise you're talking about can be removed.

My Pbass works great for a variety of sounds with round wounds as you say, but controlling EQ etc. But one sound I achieved years ago by accident with a Gibson EB2D and a cheap Heathkit amp has not been possible so far.

The sound was very close to McCartney's Hofner on songs like "Rain."

I still have access to this semi-hollow body Gibson, but was wondering if I needed flat wounds to get that tone. Now I am using a Fender 100w Rumble amp. Not sure if that is my main limitation or not.

What strings do you guys recommende to get that "booming" sound?

Dan

Oh yea, I forgot to mention what type of amp I use. I have a pretty junky 10 watt amp at home, but my "employer" has a GK 500 Backline and a matching 3x3 foot four head cab to go with it, but lately weve been using a line six pre amp board and running it direct, could this be a problem?

I'm have to say that I have never used any of the strings listed above, but I'm on board with the last two guys. I have DR Longnecks on my Warwick Thumb 5 and love them. I'm looking at put the Steve Harris Rotosounds on my 50's P-Bass. I have an Ampeg PR810 and an SVT4-Pro head, I have never had string noise when I'm playing my Warwick. Have you looked at the Steve Harris strings? They're a Heavy set of flats, the combo of the high string tension and the flatwound string may help you get rid of the string noise.

Also, check if you can play with the compression on gate settings on your POD, as well as the brightness and/or presence. You maybe able to play with a graphic EQ and keep you set up as is.

Thats my 2 cents.

on my p bass i use the standard, the classic...labella flatwounds, james jamerson deep talkin series, i have the d addario chromes on right now and they are coming off as fast as i can get a set of labellas, i tried em, imho they lack the depth, and the e string has a real "tanky" sound, on my jazz right now i am using dean markley cryogenics, great strings. on my squier 5 string am going to try the elixers.
