I recently purchased a new authentic parchment white pick guard for my 1975 P Bass.I haven’t had an original pick guard on it for nearly 20 years so the original one is long gone and I have no photos of it

The new pick guard has a rather large opening for truss rod adjustment. The opening is about as big as a little finger fingernail.

Is this normal for 70’s basses? The photos of basses I have seen from that era show little or no opening near the truss rod.

I don't know. I have seen basses from the 70s with the truss rod notch in them. The pickguard you bought, was it an original pg from the 70s or was it from a pg company like All-Parts or Stew-Mac? I am not very knowledgable about old basses, but if your bass has the truss rod adjustment located at the base of the neck, and you got a pg with a notch in it, then all is well. Unless of course......
