Greetings:

I recently inherited a 1985 Squier Precision bass, made in Japan. I am planning on selling it but not sure what a fair price would be. Aside from a few minor dings and scratches, the bass is in very good condition. There is no case.

I would add some photos but I don't see how to insert an image into this post.

Anyway, I'd appreciate some feedback as to it's estimated value.

Thanks.

Welcome to the Fender Forum.

There are more Squier experts in the Squier forum, so you may wish to post there as well. What is the serial number? That would help. You can replace the last 3 digits with "X" if that makes you nervous. I checked the photos and it appears to be in very good to excellent condition but the photos are not complete.

To get to the Squier Bass forum go to the BOARD INDEX and scroll down to the SQUIER BY FENDER section. There is one area for bass questions there. You'll see it near the bottom of the list.

A few cautions about whatever value quotes you get. 1. Condition is critical, including originality. 2. The price here and the price there are two different things. 3. Just because a vintage dealer is selling one similar for X amount of dollars doesn't mean you will. Vintage dealers typically get more than an owner gets in a private party sale. 4. Japanese Squiers are very desirable as Squiers go.

Thanks much for your response.

The serial # is A017xxx. Is it a bad idea to post full serial numbers?

I'll add another photo of the back of the guitar - I assume that's what you meant?

I'll also post this to the Squier group.

The serial does date to 1985/1986. It was made by FUJIGEN, who produces guitars for many major brands, and it is "Made in Japan" which carries more value than the "Crafted in Japan" hallmark which came later. Some of these were 32" scale instead of the normal 34" scale. Do you know which you have? That might be important info also. I don't have any idea what this is worth in either the medium 32" scale or standard long 34" scale, but I'm sure someone in the Squier section will have a good idea. It looks really nice!

The fretboard measures 32" from the nut to the last fret. Between the 32- and 34-inch scales, is one more desirable than the other or is it just a matter of personal preference?

I think the scale should be measured from the nut to the bridge saddles, of course there will be some variation here due the adjustable intonation travel of the bridge saddles but that is generally how to measure scale. I don't know whether the 32 or 34 inch version is more scarce. The more scarce one will probably have the greatest value to a collector but most players (however not all) will prefer to actually play a 34 inch which is the Fender standard scale for a P-Bass or J-Bass.

Also regarding the serial, some people are uncomfortable posting complete serial numbers. It is possible someone could duplicate the serial on a knockoff. I believe the more common fear is that someone potentially could report their bass stolen, use your serial number and wind up claiming your instrument was stolen from them should the police stumble across it.

Serials are important to keep track of in case an instrument or gear is stolen. I've written a tutorial on this subject which is published here: http://brotherdave.com/add_protectyourgear.htm

I measured wrong - it is 32" from the nut to the saddle.

What you say about the serial number makes sense.

So far, no one on the Squier Bass forum has responded. I did find some posts on another bass forum and it looks like around $350-$400 would be a fair price.

Thanks for all your info, Dave. It was helpful.

You're welcome. I think that estimate is a tad low, but could be right for all I know. I would have expected that figure to be higher because these MADE IN JAPAN basses are the ones collectors seem most interested in.

Perhaps I'll hunt down one of those vintage guitar price guides. That might help.
