Here is what a friend just wrote to me outside of this forum.

He's a vintage instrument genius especially when it comes to Fender so I believe everything he says.

Quote:
"Basic standard colors on all Fender P bass at that time were 3 tone sunburst, black, olympic white, walnut, white blonde (transparent white) all with alder bodies. Natural finish w/ASH body. Antigua finish was available around 74~78.

Lots of custom metallic, solid, & pastel colors were also available for additional charge."

Along with the '74 chart I also lack scans of the very first 1960 chart and the following years that I'd like to have. 1968, 1969, 1971, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981. The rest of them through the CBS era I have. If you have the missing years, and can email high resolution scans of them then I will post them. The charts that I do have are listed HERE: http://brotherdave.com/add_data.htm

Your friend's report might be accurate. I have a Fender 72/73 color chart showing only the colors of Sunburst (500), Blond (501), Lake Placid Blue (502), Olympic White (505), Black (506), Candy Apple Red (509), Natural (521) and Walnut (522) available. Additionally that year there were the following colors used on some Fender instruments but these following colors were not used on P-Basses: Competition Stripe Burgundy (really more of a BLUE color-511), Competition Red (512), Red (515), Blue (517) That is all the colors in 1972/1973. No pastels really at all.

The next chart year I have is 1976 which was significantly scaled back with the only colors offered being White, Blond, Natural, Tobacco Sunburst, Sunburst, Walnut and Black. That was all!

It is possible they upped the color choices before scaling them down again. But the trend in general was toward fewer colors, not more. Candy Apple Red for example was dropped around this time.

It is listed as Brother Dave says on the '72 catalog but I have a Firemist Gold & Firemist Silver P Basses that are 100% original & the Silver is '72 neck date the Gold's neck date is faded but the 2 & A are legible (has an A neck jazz size. I like the jazz sized unbound maple neck) so I assume it to be a '72 also. Are these odd balls, one offs, or just leftover bodies that got used? Doesn't the 1970 catalog stil include these colors on the back cover? I know someone will want a photo of these along the line so I will provide one as soon as I find out where to host a photo with my new ISP.

This is 6 of my P Basses a 1973 Sunbusrt Fretless is not shown & a soon to have mini P Bass in surf green is not shown. Also a possible refinished 70's P Bass could be added in the spring. The basses here are all original with original finishes. From L-R; 1966 Olympic White, 1969 Black, 1969 Lake Placid Blue, 1973 Candy Apple Red, 1972 Firemist Silver, 1972 Firemist Gold.

Model years ran July 1 to June 30th. So your bass could have been made in 72 prior July 1 and the available color chart would have been different than the 72 colors. That 72 chart is sparse for sure.

Brother Dave; I found the 1970 catalog I had (didn't realize I had that one) & it does list the 2 firemist colors. You are correct (once again) About the basses The Firemist Silver is March 72. The Firemist Gold, though the date is almost gone, appears to start with an 'A' so I would figure April 72. Thanks again Brother Dave!

BPGoalie,
Any chance you could email me a jpg or gif scan of that color chart? If so private message me here and I'll give you an email address to send it to. I could post it as a historic resource.
