Morning everyone,

My father passed away about a month about and he had a 67 Fender Jazz bass. I'm looking for the best option or place to sale this awesome bass. It just has some real bad memories for me and I'm not wanting to keep it around. It's been confirmed it's a 67.

Any thought from the forum would be great!

EBay & Craigslist.
First take it to a guitar Fender specialists repair shop
and get it set up and have all of the electronics checked.
Then, make sure the professional gives you a written evaluation
of work performed and his opinions of the guitar.

Good luck. Toppscore :)

You have a pretty amazing bass. I understand you want to sell it now, but if you have kids/grandkids or other relatives who may be interested in the bass, you might want to consider offering it to them first, as something with that kind of value (monetary and familial) should stay in the family in my opinion. If you're certain you want to sell it, then eBay, CL, and your local online classifieds are the way to go. A music store will only be able to pay about half its value so as to make a profit on it.

Send me an email address and I will send you a pic of the bass!

Like I said, father played on the road instead of spending time with his kids and it has bad memories. Want to sale and buy a car for my boy!

Sorry for your loss.

First, the idea of offering it to anyone else in the family who might actually want it is a great idea.

Secondly, the idea of getting it checked out locally and possibly getting an appraisal locally is a good idea only if the person you take it to is knowledgeable about vintage Fender basses. If you live in a small town, this might be an issue. You should seek an appraisal from a vintage instrument expert. A written appraisal is a useful sales tool and you can expect to pay for this service, just as you would for a jewelry appraisal. As long as you are paying you might as well get one of the most noted vintage authorities to appraise it, George Gruhn at Gruhn Guitars in Nashville. He will do a written appraisal online for $50 via his website at http://gruhn.com/ or an in person appraisal but that costs more. He is "THE MAN" when it comes to vintage guitar appraisals. The appraisal value, the asking price and the actual sale price (what I personally call the "final actual value") are three different things in the vintage instrument business. When an instrument appraises for $5000 the asking price might be $3900 and it might actually sell for $3300. Three different numbers. Instruments almost never sell at the full appraisal value, but usually sell for a majority percentage of the appraisal value.

Third, whatever a truly knowledgeable vintage dealer offers you to buy it in an outright sale, then they are going to try to resell it for about twice that amount. Using the same instrument appraised at $5000 for example they will figure to ask $3900 for it and expect to get at least $3300 for it so they will offer you $1650 to buy it outright.

Fourth, since a vintage dealer would price it at about twice their offer you might think you can get that same amount for it easily yourself in a private sale. Well actually it can take time to sell one in a private sale even at just slightly more than what the dealer offers you. Many leading vintage dealers have an established clientele and the dealer may actually know of someone in the market for one just like it. As a private seller you can not expect to get such a figure as the doubled dealer offer in a private sale, but you certainly can expect to do somewhat better in a private sale than what the vintage dealer offers you in an outright buy.

Fifth, there are all sorts of horror stories about sales and purchases of vintage instruments via internet auction sites. Be SUPER cautious here. Recently in nearby Charlotte, NC a man sold his car on Craigslist to someone who paid him in cash, but all of it turned out to be counterfeit cash so use caution on Craigslist too. Every flake in the universe is prowling Craigslist and it is hard to separate the sincere from the flakes or even from the outright criminals who only want to know where this bass is so they can come steal it later.

Sixth, the most often overlooked sales vehicle is a vintage instrument dealer consignment sale. In such an arrangement a contractual agreement is made in which the vintage dealer takes actual physical possession of your instrument so they can sell it for you. The dealer will get a commission from the sale and you get the balance of the sale price. There are advantages to a consignment sale. The main one is that you will probably clear more than you would in a private sale (eBay and Craigslist included) and there is hardly any risk or work involved so long as you use a reputable vintage dealer. Right now the vintage dealer asking prices for the three collectible class 1967 Fender Jazz Basses that I know of for sale in the USA range from $6500 in very good condition to nearly $11,000 for a rarity in one of the scarcer custom colors. Do not short sell yours. George Gruhn also does consignment sales and if you decide to go the consignment route with a vintage dealer then that is the one I'd recommend. If you want to phone him and discuss the particulars of a consignment sale agreement the number is (615)256-2033. I think you will come out ahead of a private sale and it is safer too.

Seventh, there have been and will be better times to sell a vintage instrument than right now. Prices are deflated and cash is tight. If you can keep it just one to two years you may realize a much higher sale price. Now isn't as bad as a year ago but I expect more improvement in the vintage market in the next two years. However further improvement depends upon the economy continuing to improve. For the past three years it has been a buyers market, not a sellers market.

Brotherdave,

Thank you so much for your response! I can't tell you how little I really know about the the music or instrument industry. I know the bass was worth some money but had no idea really what I had. I've been looking to get more info on the bass and finally found someone here in Indy that want trying to offer me dumb advice or get me to sale the the bass.

I found a man here in town who can do the appraisal for $50 and was very understand of my situation and said many of the same things you have talked about. He suggested I get the instrument document and appraised and all the pickups and things cleaned without doing anything to the base its self.

Again, thank you for the information and I may take your suggestion and have the gentleman in your response do the work.

Thank you !

Oh, I'm sorry. I mistakenly assumed you meant it made you think of him, which can be hard during a grieving period. I understand now. It's still an incredibly amazing bass that doesn't pop up every day, and you should take care in whatever you decide to do with it. You'd be right to follow BrotherDave's advice.

$50 sounds fair if he knows his stuff. Don't do anything but clean it up and perhaps do a setup with new strings if it needs new strings. It may not even need new strings, but it probably does. Other than strings, orignality down to the original solder joints is critical to value as is any related doumentation such as original sales receipts, original case, manual, and the other original items that came with the instrument which is sometimes called "case candy." All-original instruments are worth far more than what a modified one will be. Therefore you should not replace any parts at all. The $50 appraisal at Gruhn is via internet using photos you supply, an in person appraisal would be better but he charges quite a bit more for that. If you have someone there who would do a written in-hand appraisal for $50 that is reasonable. He may offer to buy it outright or put it on consignment for you. I'd do the consignment deal before selling it outright. If having it around bothers you, then consignment will get it out of sight and maximize the amount of cash you get from the sale. Instruments typically sell faster and for slightly higher prices in what I call "music-center cities" like Nashville, LA and NYC.

You can check around selling sites to get a feel.
The real key is to know and advertise what is original or replace.
You will not want returns.
Also, do whatever it takes to make it a good working guitar
with minimal or ZERO original parts changes.

The body condition is extremely important for top dollar.
If not in good shape, then consider it a users or players guitar.
Museum quality versus player/user quality are two different worlds.

Good luck. Get us some pictures. Take care. Toppscore 8)

All nicer 60's are in demand, even the CBS ones. It used to be just the pre-CBS era 60's ones that were desireable, but the pre-CBS stuff is now super scarce which means the next best thing is a CBS 60's and the 64-69 models have actually seen sharp increases lately. There really isn't that much difference between the 67 and a 70.
