To me the skinny frets give the bass a better more wood tone. I hope that makes sense. Like I said before the only thing I changed were pickups. Old Dimarzios are my favorite and they make both my Classic and Roadworn sing.

I think I'd put in a set of the Duncan Raised A's. That's probably all I would do. That's sure a hell of a lot cheaper then buying an AVS 57RI... :?

Bit of a update, went out playing the music stores last weekend and played a few 4 stringers. My opinions
MIM standard: neck pocket poor fit, fret work average. Played well BUT
Did feel like a less expensive bass.
50's Classic, better build, love the sound, neck profile nice but the finish on the back of the neck felt very thick to me.
MIA special: nice, finish on the body felt/looked very thick which was a shame. Neck was nice, almost there.
MIA Standard: hell!! Neck was beatiful, finish floorless and thin, the satin finish on the back of the neck combined with the fret work made this neck the best I have played in 30 years.

So in short, my lady wife has bought me a brand new 2011 spec MIA STD in burst with maple neck. I'm not allowed to have her until my 40th in December

Thanks so much for all the info guys
M

Congrats! The vintage C width neck on the Classic is definitely beefier. Glad you found the right one for you, but I'm sorry you have to wait!

I may have mentioned that I have an AV 57 -- the Classic '50s is right up there with it.

Oh yeah, and a Classic '51. You go, Fender!

When I got my 2005 Classic 50's Honey Blonde Precision Bass by Fender( Road Dog bass makers), I had only played it in my cave. When I took it out to a jig and it came thru the PA-- OH MAN--- I was pumped because it sounded way better than I thought it wood. So I kind of knew when I got my 2009 Fender Roadworn Sunburst Precision Bass that it wood sound good too also as well along with and in conjunction to the Classic. I was at one with the basses and confident I could play them at any gig except one out in the rain. I wasn't too sure about that. Mind you I did put after market pickups in them because they sounded a bit thin out of the box and that is where I like to think and write. I'm thinking I could install a windshield wiper on each bass and that would take care of the rain thing. :D

Wow! You shouldn't tell everybody these great ideas. Somebody will patent it and make millions, you'll end up like that guy who invented Velcro.
