Funny you mention the Steve Harris bass, because thats exactly what I thought, as Steve's bass is a '71 or '72, & has been upgraged with a Seymour Duncan Vintage SP1 ( I believe Nate has SP3's) & both basses have Badass II Bridges with the exception that Steve has a Maple neck & Fretboard & Nate has a Maple neck & Rosewood fretboard.
Now I'm under the imperssion that the Nate basses are supposed to be Candy Apple Red but the photo I saw on the Foo's Facebook page showed what looked like the body of a Blue Sparkle P Bass......so who knows maybe both colors will be an option???

The Steve Harris P bass is a good example of me going into my local music store to buy an Aerodyne P Bass that was on sale because they'd just been discontinued (back in March 2009).....anyway I was too late & the last one was sold but just a mere couple of hours earlier the store had just recieved & put out the Newly issued Steve Harris P Bass..needless to say this bass is very striking when you see it in person..so I went into one of the booths & took it for a spin...I was so impressed with the quality of this bass & the feel & sound I got from it that.. The Steve Harris P Bass ended up coming home with me......& as my theory goes & as I've said before.....this one plays great but in the event that this one gets sold & I don't get the same vibe on the next Steve Harris bass that I play...I'm taking this one home......& I've never regretted getting the Steve Harris P Bass. :D

I've always preached, play as many as you can, when you get the right one, you'll know. I practice that philosophy too, my Precision, Jazz ans VM Jazz all felt right.

My point about Artist models is, I played a geddy and Duck, the duck was used at GC and just didn't do it for me. You;ve been fortunate in finding instruments that are worthy of praise.

i'll let you know about the steve Harris when i win it! :D

Thanks !! :) & yes it is a great great bass (& Steve Harris is a great player) I'm also proud to say I got one from the first batch that Fender shipped to North american stores in March 2009 (the month it was released)...... This thing is built like a tank.....the only other P-bass I would consider were I to purchase another Precision is the Tony Franklin P Bass (fretted or Fretless) & the current American Deluxe P Bass these are also kick $@! basses.. :)

I'm digging the last two pages. You guys put some of my thoughts into words on a lot of the idea of a Sig bass. Some are the artist input and some maybe not so much but in the end a good one is a good one. Some better than others. Fender has the expanded marketing thing going on with the sig basses to reach all types of players.

Thanks Stroker Vance........I gotta say I'm enjoying this thread & the opinions being put forth & even though I'm a hugh fan of Fender I have to say there are some Fender Basses that I've played that were 'Meh so so...& I have played many others that played like Buttah" like the Select Jazz bass, (simply amazing but a little rich for me at the moment) or the current American Deluxe P basses & Jazz basses, the Road worn Basses etc. all good basses.
Right now I've done something I've never done before, I wanted a bass with a P/J set up to round out my arsenal ( I also wanted to take advantage of the Fender rebate) so I decided to order a Reggie Hamilton 3 tone Sunburst Jazz Bass, sight unseen & one that I've never played.......I did enough research on this bass (it's gotten good reviews) & it's a lot of bang for the buck
it's also supposed to be one of the better ones coming out of Mexico......Stay Tuned !! I'll keep you all posted.......it's due to arrive in mid October..........& this is yet another senario where I was looking for a bass with certain features & opted for a Signature model......I read a thread that Reggie Hamilton participated in on the Talk Bass Forum & was discussing His signature model, & like Marcus Miller he & Fender worked together in the making of his Signature bass..... the original one was a Custom shop bass & the lower priced MIM's came a few years later......I'll definately give feed back & my opinion when it arrives..... :D

Def looking forward to picking up a 'Arry bass when I get to the mainland. I played the school's bass for a couple years in high school, and it had that big fat neck on it and weighed a ton. Loved every moment.

UP THE IRONS!

One of the special things on this bass(I believe) is that it will have a special neck. From one of the interviews with Nate on Fendervision, he said that the neck on his original bass was made only for a few months, and was supposed to be a combination of a Jazz and a P. I am assuming this is going to be recreated on the signature model.

Yes ......I also read something regarding this about a month ago, I believe it's going to be a similar with regard to spec's to the necks on the American Deluxe P basses (but don't quote me on that as I read it online..) :)

Or...possibly a compound radius?

I'm just going off what Nate said. Compound Radius sounds cool though. I've seen him use Highway Ones a lot, so I'm assuming the neck will be like that.

HWY1 uses a modern neck, there's nothing special about it. As brotherdave points out, it's possible, though highly doubtful in my opinion, that it may have a compound radius. I believe there was a short run of basses at some point that had them and his may be from that era.

If it's going to be an american made bass I could believe it might have a compound radius neck, but I can't see them doing those as a production run in Japan or Mexico. A compound radius takes more time then a normal cut neck. Does his 71 have a maple or rosewood fingerboard, and do we know where this bass will get churned out at?

It's possible it'll have an A-Width P neck, which is just a J Bass spec'd neck, but with no bindings and I believe the P versions might have had a little more "meat" in the back instead of being super thin both in terms of width and depth.

Given that his bass will likely have most of the same specs as Steve Harris'. (basically a different pup upgrade, and possibly fingerboard) I would look to that bass to get an idea of what you might possibly be seeing.

From what I've seen Nate's Basses have Rosewood fretboards, & aside of having a '71 P Bass, didn't The Fender Customshop make a P Bass for him that was modelled after his '71?
That being said I'd be surprized if it was Made In America or even Made in Japan as Fender seems to be moving it's MIJ basses to Mexico for Production.........case in point the 60's & 70's Jazz basses, the 50's P Bass, 70's P bass the Geddy Lee Jazz Bass & Marcus Miller 4 string Jazz Bass............ The Steve Harris P Bass & Sting P bass are still MIJ at the moment..........
Last week while I was in my local music store I picked up & played a MIM Geddy Lee Jazz Bass ( I wanted to see if there was any difference compared to my 2006 CIJ Geddy Lee Jazz Bass)........& I have to say other than the action being a little high I was impressed with the new Mexican version of this bass & finally it makes sence dollar wise for Fender to move production from Japan to it's Mexican plant as it's only 2 Hours away from the Corona California plant.... :)

Given that information, I'd wager that his bass will likely have the same neck as Steve Harris' but with a Rosewood board. Likely MIJ. That neck IS a bit of an oddity because as far as I can tell it's a MIJ vintage spec neck, but has the truss adjustment on the headstock. Which is odd. So Nate's bass will likely be the same as Steve's but with a rosewood board and offered in his basses color. Which is CAR, correct? Both basses should be killer if that is the case. Hard to go wrong with either one. Honestly, if that is the case and I had the cash I'd probably pick up both. Run the Mendel P bass with rounds and the Harris P with flats. Hard to beat that combo.

Funny you should mention the Vintage neck spec's on MIJ P Basses & the comparison to the neck on the Steve Harris Bass.......... last night while buying strings I saw a Sting bass & took it for a spin & the first impression I got was the neck on this bass feels similar to the neck on my Steve Harris Bass.. (both are MIJ with chunky necks.....7.25 radius.....however the nut is slightly wider on the Steve Harris Bass)....... the Sting is a nice bass, very solid. :)
