Foo Fighters Grammy acceptance speech was incredible..standing ovation..pointing out how it all starts with learning your instrument loved it..Im a big fan..Back and Forth is an incredibly fun song to play and Walk is great too! I think their main message is you can record in your garage..you dont need bezillion dollar studios you just need to make music correctly!

Rock isn't dying. Bands like The Foo Fighters, Green Day, Weezer, My Chemical Romance Blink 182,Panic at The Disco, and Say Anything are carrying the torch. (they all play P-basses too, go figure) They'll be the one to hand down that torch to the younger generations that are still playing any gigs they can and trying to get out there. Speaking as someone who is in an under ground scene, it not dead. You have bands like that to thank for this. Its not old school rock and roll (which by the way is amazing) but its influenced by it and that's what matters, as long as you give credit to what came before you. By giving signature models, they're showing kids that their rock music is just as important as yours. Thereby getting them excited to start their own band.

Okay I want Nate Mendel to come on this very forum and explain all about his new signature bass. OH he's not going to do that?? Well I would have never guessed that!!

Then Geddy lee should come here and splain about his bass.

Why don't the dudes ever come on the Fender forum?? I guess they are just too busy 365 days a year,

OR it's just not cool for a big time bassist to come to the forum of the company that puts out their signature bass and talk to the very people that will buy the signature bass and or think the signature bass is so cool?? Wassup with that?
:D :D :D :D

YEAH!

O.K., on a serious note, my only gripe about artist basses is, they are always made of a lesser quality. Pickups, bridges, whatever, make them as good as the real things.

I have to disagree with you, I have a few Artist models, a marcus miller jazz 4 string, a Jaco fretless, A 2006 Geddy Lee Jazz & a Steve Harris P Bass, ..... other than the Geddy Lee bass I never intended on buying the other artist models that I have,........I bought them mainly because they're well made great playing & sounding basses,........ that being said I've played artist models made by other guitar manufacturers that I felt were sub par.

I kind of lean toward what oxfan says but I know when you get a whole bunch of apples- one of them can be real red and just the sweetest --- Then there can be the bad apple.... we know what that one does...right?

Now then I'd like to see a signature "Tonto Yoder" P bass. He plays for an indie band---
"Arrowbuggy".......

For the most part, Artist basses are just production run mock ups of basses that were plain old production run basses that have certain, or sometimes NO mods. Like the CS Pino, or the Sting to name just a few.

I think I'd be more interested in basses that were "from the mind of..." basses. Where you give the artist a build sheet and tell them to go to town. Even the Dirnt and the Hoppus a bit outside of the box atleast. Those to me are the coolest.

Other then the finish option and the fact that it's relic'd why would someone pay the extra 2500 bucks for a Pino when an AVS 62RI will get you there. You'd have to be a REALLY big Pino fan, or have some cash to burn, imo. Take away the "Stinglay" and the Sting Artist Series Bass is just a badass 53RI. I don't need Sting's name on it to make me want one.

Definately !! .........& case in point, a couple of months ago I was at my local music store to buy strings & I started checking out the new 2012 American standard Jazz & P basses that they had just got in,..I was disapointed as none of them had that wow factor, they felt nice but I wasn't blown away...anyway the store was out of the strings I needed so I went across town to their downtown location... while I was there I started checking out the American Standards yet again & low & behold I picked one up that was sweet!! & felt right.......in other words ..yes it's hit & miss & a good set up never hurts either.

I've gone through this process with every bass that I've bought........ :)

I hear what you're saying King of Pain,......wasn't the Stu Hamm bass & Victor Baily Jazz bass (both now discontinued) & Reggie Hamilton Jazz bass built with the artists input?...........I know the Marcus Miller Jazz 5 string was very much built with marcus millers input .......if interested check out marcus miller's web site & find the article on how the Marcus Miller 5 string came to be & why they didn't put a Badass bridge on it (like on his 4 string) & how the neck came to have the spec's that it has....very interesting article.

I know Geddy Lee was concerned about quality control when his artist model first came out,..........remember these models have the name of the artist on them & most of these artist don't want to associated with pedaling crap.. :)

yes, definitely. The Marcus Miller is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Sit these guys down and say. "So, if you could build ONE Fender bass. With anything you want in it. What would it be?" Those are the coolest offerings, imo. Sure some guys play stock basses, and that's cool. However, what really makes it a "Sig" bass? Nothing other then their signature. Kind of lame. To me anyhow.

Yeah.....I agree, & with regard to the Marcus miller 5 string that was created by Fender & Marcus,......I have to say Marcus did the same thing though to a smaller degree with his 1977 4 string Jazz bass in 1981 by puting a Badass II bridge on it & having Sadowsky put in a 2 band EQ & enabling his bass to be played in active or passive mode,....I love the tone I get from my Marcus Miller 4 string & I play it in passive mode the majority of the time with the neck pick up half way up & the bridge pick up all the way up a notch before full, & remember in passive mode on the Marcus Miller bass all you get is volume for each pick up with no tone........& in active mode you get addition bass & treble knobs....
anyway I play rock & classic rock & this works for me. ..... :) & with regard to original Signature basses......I also thought the Roscoe Beck Bass was an interesting Bass. :)

Indeed. The RB was a cool bass. Way more then I'd need in a bass, but certainly an interesting animal and worthy of being called a "Signature Bass". As you said, with Marcus Miller's bass, it started out stock, but the guy modded it himself to get where he wanted to be. A reproduction of that bass is definitely a worthwhile model. Or even the Tony Franklin model with the J pup and selector switch. That's a cool mod.

Who knows, maybe this will be whatever this guy plays. A 71 with a BAII bridge I think someone mentioned. However, I'd think you could get that with the Steve Harris sig. I don't think a bridge or even pup upgrade alone would really get me to stop and say "Wow, THAT'S a cool bass!". However, we know that isn't really Fender's motivation here.

Now, if they were to make something like a Telecaster Bass Deluxe with two TB buckers in the neck and bridge position, independent volume and tone controls with a three stage selector switch, vintage spec neck with the Strat style headstock, 70's logo, black blocks on an unbound maple neck, string through body with a BAIII bridge, and make it available in a couple cool finishes...then yeah...I'd think that'd be a pretty damn sweet bass that might make me go.."WOW!".
