In 1997, I bought a new "50s Precision Bass" from Mars Music(remember them) in gray photoflame with mapel fretboard. Made in Japan serial #S021012. I recently removed the neck for the first time to do some maintenace and discovered the weird fact that the neck stamp shows PB-57DGF, but the body stamp shows PB-62D..
First, what do the letters after the 57 and 62 mean and why would there be such a number difference between the neck and body stamps for an untouched bass? :?:

I've read forever how Fender makes parts and then puts guitars together-- so different batches and lots come into play. Even different years, new old stock etc. Nothing should surprise anyone about parts on Fenders. They make parts here and there and ship them here and there for assy etc-- right?
As for the stuff after the #'s on your bass-- I bet Brother Dave knows- he is Guru on it.

PB57-DGF - Precision Bass 57- Dumb Girl Friend?
PB62-D - December/ Gray Foto?

I have no idea what those letters mean.
I would just play the bass and have some fun with it.

Life is treating me well, Oxfan. How about yourself?

I just bought a classic vibe '54 Precision in LPB and it is sweet.

New gear is always good! All is well here, I just welcomed my fourth grandchild, the third girl, into the world last week.

Hmmmm, this just made me think. Three bass guitars and a Stratocaster, i wonder if there's any significance.

There are three girls and a boy.

Congrats, Ox. I'm awaiting a second rugrat myself. With one boy already, I'm torn as to whether I want a boy or girl.

Thanks, no matter, boy or girl, you'll be happy. By the way, the one thing that newborn babies like is, the sound of a Steve Harris Precision Bass.

Oddly enough every Fender Japan bass made around this time, including Japanese Squiers all have these same stampings. PB-57 and PB-52 followed by the initials of the person signing off on it with the inspection mark. In this case, probably the same person may or may not have made both. Nothing special or unusual about the part numbers being different.
