Hey All,
I just picked up a Maple-necked early (Feb) '71 Precision for cheap. It's got a thick coat of clear over the wood that looks like it was brushed on. I have NO idea what color it originally was, but I'm not a fan of the clear. I'm going to strip off the clear glop from the body since it's got runs and whatnot and refin it myself. I want it to be kind of relicy (I know, I know), since the neck's a mess and all the metal bits are rusty, etc. I was thinking Black or Oly white with tortoise. Sunburst may be too risky for me to try. The pickguard isn't original and it's messed up, so any thoughts on body, p.g., pup cover color combos? I'd love to hear any thoughts you folks may have. Thanks in advance.

Nice vintage find, klunkerbill! I'd go with a professionally shot sunburst. Are you going to replace the frets, or are they good enough to dress? Is your aim to restore or hot rod?

Still waiting for it to arrive, but the frets looked okay in close ups. I don't really want to put too much money into it, since it's been modded with pickups/pots/wiring/guard, etc. I might splurge with a Pickguardian tortoise guard, thought.

Thanks for the replies. This is my first bass, as I'm a guitar guy. I like to tinker with old guitars and I really like to do refins on thrashed Fenders that were headed for the boneyard. Here's a couple pics of my last one, a '61 Duo Sonic for my boy. Since my daughter now plays drums, I thought I'd jump in to 4 strings. I looked at new MIMs, MIAs and Squiers but I just wasn't feeling it. I found this old '71 Precision and (sucked in again!) I decided to to give it a shot. It's got the original body, neck, tuners, bridge, cover, strap pins and case but the pickguard isn't and electronics were upgraded to ???. After much consideration (wife!) I set my budget at $750.00 all in. That only gives me a couple hundred to play with. I don't think I'll be sending it out for a sunburst. I figure that money will go to paint supplies, pickguard and a set up.

Thanks. That thing was SO thrashed when I got it. It was in pieces and had glow in the dark paint all over the fretboard, dots, frets and body, plus it had several coats of house paint over the body, too. The original parts were all there, though. I had read that Fender had used Desert Sand on the early MusicMasters and Duos, but in 1960 and 61 they used a darker tan color color. I saw pics of those guitars and I thought hey looked cool with the slab rosewood. I couldn't tell if mine was originally a sienna burst or tan, since it had been refinished so many times and sometimes Fender painted over colors anyway. ReRanch had just come out with the Desert Tan nitro in aerosol, so I went for it. I used some amber in the clear coats, but I made templates of the bridge, pickguard and neckplate to give it a sunburn around those areas. I'm not flipping guitars and trying to fool anybody, I'm just a geek like that.

I'll vote for Oly White with a quality aftermarket Mint Guard.

I do like that Candy Apple Red idea. White guard. CAR is easy to relic. Just carry it around with no case for a few months.

After much anguish, I think I'm going for black with a parchment guard and ebony finger rest. I really like the look of the short lived Fender Custom Shop '59 Precision Bass Black, so I guess that's it. Reranch here I come.

Cool, any chance you could take and post some pics of the process? Build and refin threads are always awesome!

Absolutely. I'm nerdy like that, but slow. It'll be awhile before I get started. Not sure what kind of shape this thing is actually in, either. I won't have axe-in-hand until the 20th so I won't really know how bad it actually is until then. Wish me luck.
