Whats the P with the white pickup covers? Original finish? The location of the thumb rest & white covers it must be 1979 or so?

I used to get email notifications up untill that one guy reemed me out for suggesting maybe he never had a good bass-- but that's beside the point....

The Surf green P bass in the picture is a 1974. It started life as a Sunburst with black pick guard. I refinished it Pearl White in 79 and it stayed that way until 1996 when it was refinned again to the Surf Green. I used it on the road and both times it got the roadworn look which wasn't popular at the time so I had it refinned. The original pickup is back in it. The riggers of the road took its tole on things like pots, pickguards, rusted screws, etc etc . A lot of stuff got changed. It was a tool and I had to keep it working. It still sounds great and I'm glad I kept the original pickup. No one ever notices that it has a Red pearl clearcoat over the neck ( not fretboard). None of the stuff diminished anything about the sound. It has a Poplar body BTW.

It has light coat of something on it but I would have it sanded off & then sealer & paint the guy I use does things right but the guy who wants it now is almost doubling my cost of what I bought it for. Neverlooked until now but the books put the serial number on the neckpate to 1974.

if it's a 74 that thin coat is a sealer they used and it's a bear to get off- it was called Thick Skin. That stuff sealed the wood and trapped moisture in the wood it was so thick-- Brother Dave knows about that stuff with the moisture thing going on. My bass was/is Poplar and it was green after the first time I refinned it and removed the Thick skin. The second refin the Poplar turned brown like it does naturally. After it's cut- green---- when dried==Brown+++ Poplar ! I wunder how many 74 P basses were made using Poplar bodies? Yours looks like Alder .

That body looks to be older than '74. The tug bar is below the strings and the tortoise shell guard could be from the early 60's to the early 70's.
I don't know if there are any other markings on the bass to indicate year.
Sometimes they penciled in a date under the pickup. That was done on the 1960 Precisions so there may be nothing there if the bass is newer.

I don't know if you have any original pots, since the pickups were swapped out for Dimarzios.

Good luck with the bass. I am sure it will look great with whatever color you decide to use.
