I think I'm gonna do surf green. It has always been a favorite color though I never had a surf green bass

Awesome! I love the color. Which way are you leaning for a pickguard?

The guard that came with the bass was tortoise so is it was probably a sunburst bass originally. I guess it should be white? What do you think?

Hmmm...I'd hate to say it but I think it'd come down to how the Surf Green looks once it's done. If it's a "typical" shade of surf I'd go with a high quality aged Mint aftermarket guard, or W/B/W. Though if it's exceptionally pale, or dark I'd think a single ply Black "bakelite", or black anodized style guard might be really cool, too. It's hard to go wrong with Surf Green. it's such a cool color. Keep us posted!

The guy doing the refin has a local paint guy that does exact Fender colors. He said te surf green is right on. He said he can put a slightly tinted top coat if I want. He's done surf green strat that looks great (has photos of his stuff). He's done alot of Fender refins.

Cool, I'm a sucker for a quality Mint guard. Not the modern type Fender sells, but from the guys who actually go through the trouble to make them look authentic. Outside of that it'd be hard to go wrong with w/b/w. It's just my feeling that if you're going to refin an old bass you might as well do the little extras to make it look sweet and unique. However, If you are trying to make it look "new" or "fresh" then w/b/w would probably be the best way to go. it would definitely give it a more pristine look.

If you're shooting for that cool vibe that an older bass gets, then I'd do something unique. What that might be is really your call. In the end, it's your baby so whatever you dig is what you should do. Can't wait to see the pics!

As an aside, Have you gone to any of the "guitar builder" sites or pickguard sites? I know there used to be a really great one, but it's been soooo many years since I've looked for a guard I can't think of it. I do know there was one that would give you the bass body and you could try different styles of guards and colors. It was pretty cool.

Which brings up another point. Do you want to stay with a standard split coil P guard, or perhaps try something different? Like an old school big 70's style Telecaster Bass pickguard cut for the split-coil? There are so many different ways and looks you could go with.

Good luck!

Nice - I like the Surf green. I may redo a parts Jazz bass I own in that color.
Speaking of Jazz basses. Is that natural Jazz bass yours? It looks to be a '71- '73.
Very nice!

Yep that's my 72 Jazz. It belonged to a gentleman that played it in every Honky Tonk from here to there for about a jillion hours or so. I love it!!!!! His pinky on his right hand actually dug a divit into the body right below the g string. I think you can see it if you look hard. Yeh it's an oval dark area . Then where he laid his palm and thumb is around the curve of the pickguard. It's Neanderthal style playing marks. He used his thumb a lot- I can tell.

Great pics! . The guy I use does killer work but he is slow because he has a day gig & so much oher finish work backed up. He does custom airbrushing art work on cars bikes etc...He has me holding onto my bass until he is close to having time so it doesn't just lie around his shop. He told me he might take it around Thanksgiving. I know it's a while plus he is a stickler about detail so he lets things really dry before wet sanding so it takes time. He cuts no corners. He said start end of November delivery after the first of the new year. Plus once he gets the color on I have to see it & decide to make it look aged with a little yellow to the clear coat.

Whats the P with the white pickup covers? Original finish? The location of the thumb rest & white covers it must be 1979 or so?

The P-bass with the white covers is one with a DiMarzio replacement pickup, I guess.

Its not mine so correct me if I am wrong. That tug bar was relocated to above the strings around 1975, so it could be a lot of different years or just be a parts bass.

Surf green is a cool color but not one to use if you want to blend into the background.

refin may not happen.........I have a guy that wants the P Bass really bad for some reason. He keeps uping his offer on it. As it is right now I could make some $$ on it & buy one that I don't have to get refined. I may hold out a while & see if he offers more. I'm on the fence if I want to put money into it or get $$ out of it as it is. I have a line on a Japanese mini P Bass in surf green. That should be very cool.
