I just picked up an old P Bass the neck is great but the body is stripped. The price was right. It was sunburst but I want to do a custom color I may never be able to have in original SO I figured I'd poll the people here. I was thinking Burgundy Mist or Sherwood Green. What do you readers here think?

How old is 'old'? :?

I like Root Beer. It was a H-D custom color for their 103rd Anniversary. Very pretty. 8)

Also, I like root beer. It tastes good.

It's 70s but I'd like to use a 1960 to 1966 color. A color I might never see or be able to afford in original. From all the features I'd say it's late 70's the neck is not dated white pickup covers with tortoise guard. I'd do an old custom color & change the guard to white & the pickup covers to black. Not to resell just for myself.

If the bass really sounds killer I wouldn't put anything on it. That's just me though. You DID ask for opinions--right?

But it is stripped of finish & the wood itself is not flattering. Plus would yu leave it bare wihout even a natural finsh?

If the bass is bare wood you should put a coat of sanding sealer before doing any finish. Sanding sealer is clear and it will protect the wood from absorbing dirt and sweat.

Please disassemble the body and remove everything before spraying the body.

I will always vote for Candy apple red as my favorite finish from the 60's 70's or any era.

Good luck with your bass.

Birchwood Casey Gunstock wax on bare wood. If prepared properly and applied the RIGHT way it would look and feel like an Ernie Ball neck only it would be a whole body. Yep if it sounded great just like it is that's what I'd do but if it's just okay I'd prob put a finish on it.

The neck is fine a little wear but not much decal is still there. The body is what needs to be refinished. I think I have settled on Burgundy mist. I have vintage P Basses in Olympic White (orignal sales slip was purchased in a TV repair shop in 1966) Lake Placid Blue 1969 looks brand new no yellowing to body or neck an under the bed find with all the case candy! Black '69, Firemist Silver, Firemist Gold, Candy Apple Red all 1972 & a 1973 Sunburst fretless. I will take a group photo & post in the near furtue plus a photo of my unfinished one.

Oh yeah I know a guy who worked in a spray booth at Guild he has a source for original Fender colors & does flawless wok he'll be doing the refinish. Takes a while since he has a day job & some other work backed up.

I was shopping for a bass in 1985 and the store had a purple Jazz. It was so ugly it was beautiful. At the time I had only enough cash for a cheap Yamaha. I think about it sometimes.
