Hi all
I picked up a 74 P a few years back, p/u are dead. Replaced them with new stock. Would like get this back to as original as possible. Suggestions where rewinding and pots refurbished if possible is there anyone in Canada to suggest besides sending to USA facility
p/u number dates are 243674 & have original screws
pots are 250k 1377429 with original jack
F Script serial indicates 1975, neck stamp 1974, original bridge still in except for saddles totally oxidized screws. One ply black pick-guard not original and the dude that had this before me put on a brass nut... yikes!

Thanks in advance for the suggestions
Best regards from Montreal

Send your pick-up to Lindy Fralin. He'll rewind it for ya.

He's the best there is.

I'd say soak the saddles for days in wd 40 and heat them a bit with a plumbers torch then soak them in the WD and that may loosen up the rust-- then again it may not -- I've done that before with some success. There may be other solvents to use for soaking the saddles . I turned the saddle screws from the bottom with pliers to loosen them and I was able to go in on top and screw them out the bottom so the threads I messed up with the pliers never went into the threaded saddle hole. Right?

Tks for the tip Stroker much appreciated... however screws are so corroded cant see the screw line. Even the certified Fender repair centre tech (Custom Shop as well) saw it & in all probabability it would not be salvageable.

Having a headstock crack repaired, brass nut removed & replaced with period correct original volume/tone control put back strap buttons, original pickup & pots put back to spec.
Time to put this baby back to where it should be and take her out for those special gigs & play it at home.
Want to keep this around unlike the 62 Jazz Bass Lake Placid Blue, brown beige tolex case sheepskin lined I sold in 1975 . Yeah I know shoot me now, young and stupid, what can I say. Wont even mention the 64 Bassman amp then, total brain cramp. Did I mention the Acoustic 140B with 3 band EQ & Altec Lansing K140s 2 x 15 mounted in a Traynor YT 15 cab.... must have forgot. OK time to shoot me again

So now I just received new workhorse RW 60's JBass (sorry PBass dudes but I gotta have something to relive the past)

Really impressed with RW baby, but I'm a bringin' both out for the those nice gigs

The trouble with rewinding pickup is the cost. Most of the major USA pickup shops charge about as much to rewind as for a new vintage recreation from the same shop! In some cases they charge MORE for a rewind! In my opinion people are being gouged by overpriced rewinds. There is one exception to this. Brandon Wound Pickups where it costs $25. Their link is http://www.brandonwoundpickups.com/?page=services

While his website does not specificially state he rewinds bass pickups, I know for a fact he does a good job with them. He isn't as well known as Lindy Fralin, but really it isn't rocket science to wind a pickup. I own Fralin and for new pickups with vintage flavor Fralin's shop is tops. However paying about the same thing as a whole new pickup costs to get one rewound is for rubes. Time was a rewind was done by about every repair shop in North America!

Since you are in Canada and looking for someone capable there, I would suggest that you contact GORD MILLER of Gord Miller Vintage Restorations who is a highly sought out expert at restoring vintage Fender & other instruments. He just happens to be in Canada, so see who he recommends. Gord's contact info:
Toll Free Phone: 1-877-394-8676
His email: gord@gmvintagerestorations.com

I have a feeling he might recommend Sheptone in Burley, Washington USA. Then again he might know someone else that specializes in P-Bass pickups in Canada.
He can also give you an idea about the pot refurbishment options and a decent replacement bridge in or close to Canada too. I understand your reluctance to ship vintage parts internationally.

Well the Fender Gold / Custom Shop service centre has sent my pickups to Toronto for a rewind. Said that this is the best guy to do them, has had excellent results....& importantly not shipping stuff around the globe
Got that head-stock crack epoxy'd up and dried. Taking the brass nut out that came with the bass when I inherited and close up that crack and in goes a nice unbleached bone one. Found a period correct pick-guard, all original knobs, pots, strap buttons being put back on. Except those oxidized saddle screws... not even an oxy torch machine oil bath.... zip all works, so well gonna keep them on the side.

Meanwhile enjoying the RW Jazz, so different, versatile though I do miss the P for sure
