Hey gang, my first post as I recieved my first Fender today, a brand new American Deluxe Precision, natural ash body with Maple neck. It is a real beauty! My question is... You know the thin sheet of plastic that covers the pick guard of a new guitar? After carefully peeling most of it away I'm still left with little shreds under all the control knobs... Do I have to remove all the knobs to clean up these shreds? Or should I just not worry about them? I feel the knobs would turn smother without these plastic bits stuck under everything. If I have to remove the knobs, is there a safe way without causing damage?

I have taken the pots loose before and have had to loosen the p guard screws to get all the plastic gone. That's just me . I don't like the plastic shreds so I always do what I have to to get rid of it. If you are afraid you will damage your guitar then maybe whoever you got it from (store?) can do it for you.

Welcome to the forum. Nice axe. But we have a saying here: No Pic = No Bass!

Loosen the set screws on the knobs. The set screw requires either a hex key or a small flathead screwdriver. Either way they are standard threads which means they function in the "Lefty Loosey, Righty Tighty" format. I don't know on these knobs if they use flat head screws like on a standard P-Bass or hex screws like on a Jazz. I'm guessing flat head. There maybe two screws on each component of the stacked knob or maybe just one on the top knob in the stack. A jeweler's screwdriver works good on these little screws. Once the screws are loose the knobs will actually fall right off. The set screws are in the little holes on the side of each knob. Remove the remaining plastic and reinstall the knobs "Righty-Tighty." I agree that plastic is annoying under the knobs. Most real world dealers will remove the plastic layer as part of the post sale setup.

I'll never forget one customer than called in one time at Ralph's Radio Music saying his Fender Precision Bass pickguard was defective and wanted to know if we would check it out. I asked what it was doing and he said it was coming apart. When he brought it in, it turned out he bought it at another dealer (Rhythm City in Atlanta) and they didn't remove the plastic. He had been playing it that way for over a year and sure enough the plastic was wearing through in spots. However his guard was fine. I took it in the back and "fixed" the pickguard for him in about 5 minutes at no charge and a few months later I sold him a new Bassman 100 stack. Customer service with a smile goes a long way.

Thanks for the responce! The thing is, when I picked up my bass at the shop it had just arrived the day before, and case were still in the protective cardboard shipping case... I was the first to set eyes on it or touch it, (which pleased me). When I asked about setup, the dealer told me that the high end American basses have a decent setup straight from the factory, and he recommended I play it for a while until I become much more used to the instrument..... And then, bring it back for a free setup, working beside the guitar tech and telling him my personal preferences etc. I thought this sounded like good advice, and the bsss seems to play great as is! I checked the intonation with a Peterson strobe and it was spot on...Now let me see if I can attach a pic!
