Welcome to the Forums, i can't reply because I haven't seen any up close. Sounds like a winner, from the new models I have seen, they're doing a nice job.

Good luck! Post some pictures when you get it.

Welcome LEDREW! While I've not played that model, I do like the white maple neck on my '76 Precision. Brighter more lively tone than a rosewood fretboard.

Here's a pic of my '09 model in sunburst. I was playing a fiesta red Classic '50s with a Quarter Pound pickup and, getting a little money, decided to upgrade. This one is very nice, and all my bass-playing friends are envious.

I love the feel, especially the vintage frets, which allow me to get around much faster than the usual "medium jumbos" on most modern basses, and it sounds at least as good as the QP-equipped Classic (both have TI Jazz Flats). It's reasonably light, and my lady friends call it the "honey" bass.

I almost got the white blonde, but I wouldn't trade this one. Great bass.

Better play one first. You may not like the wide neck.

thanks for the tip stroker, but to be honest, i sort of prefer the bigger necks on guitars and basses,,i have pretty big hands and i think itd be just rite for me,,ive been playing this ol profile p bass ( p for plywood haha) and i figured its time to treat myself to a real bass...i did what i could with the profile...slapped a badass II bridge on it, popped in all new electronics, fender original 62 p bass pickups, and while the thing sounds fine...i decided to compare with a close friends american series usa p bass (alder body, rosewood fretboard, s-1 switch) and i might as well have thrown the profile out the window and in the river...haha just no bottom at all compared to a real precision (obviously) so i figured its time for the real thing.....the way it ought-ta be. i was lookin around and readin up on everything fender had goin now and decided id go with the american vintage 57 with the white blonde ash body....looks great, im sure itll sound and feel even better! cheers! ill keep everyone posted haha

I used to do the same thing with Fernandes P basses and others. I have even modded USA P basses to try and get them to sound better to no avail. A dud is a dud. I know the next bass I buy I want to play the heck out of it first. I can usually tell a good one through my SWR and Epifani cab. Many Fender basses I have owned have been sub par to the ones I kept. I sold the ones that just didn't have "it". The "it" is hard to describe but I know "it" when I hear "it". Sometimes one can hear the "it" without plugging in. BUT I would not buy one without plugging in to see fer sure that it has "it". I like "it" only. I don't care if the neck is a football field or what. If it has "it" I want it.

IT? There seems to be a common chord flowing through the forums. I'm thinking it's time for the Zetler lawn rake, teflon cornbread panns and more chicken jokes.

I love the AV '57 neck and the small frets. I find I can get around really fast on it. Here's me and the Classic '50s, which has a similar shape:

Am I wrong about this, didn't the actual 57 have the two saddle bridge like the first generation basses and then in 58 the 4 barrel bridge debuted? Maybe I'm wrong but I remember a few real 57's and I think they had the 2 saddle bridge.

Also on any instrument with the "vintage" frets be cautious of using stainless rounds. They will wear down the diminutive frets more quickly than you would think possible. A plus side of the vintage frets for me is that they enable almost fretless like slide tones. I have one instrument with these frets and it is a blast to play and I keep it setup with flats. I'd recommend flats on any instrument with vintage frets. Vintage frets on a bass means it was made using the same size fretwire used on say a Strat or Tele guitar.

@brotherdave

I've heard that a few '57 Ps feature jumbo frets and a 9,5" radius as opposed to the AVRI editions. True or false?
