Hi, I'm new here. Two questions if anyone wants to chime in. First, I have an MIJ P Bass serial number E8*****. Most likely made in '87. I definitely bought it new in '87 for roughly $389. I will never sell this bass, but just wondering what it's worth mint. (It is not mint, it's seen a lot of play.) Just curious. Haven't found anything similar on ebay or the like to gauge a value. Second: I've adjusted the truss rod twice in 25 years, both times using a small standard screwdriver (at the heel of the neck,) but was just wondering if it's commonplace to remove the neck to do this. I didn't want to, so I just kind of smoothed that little screwdriver in there a few times until I got a good quarter or so turn. I have other basses but I've logged so many hours on this one, and I've recently begun using it again more frequently and just got curious about how others might maintain these guitars. For the record, I think the stock pickups sound much better now than they did way back when, although I'm using much better amps these days, so who knows? Any feedback would be appreciated--thanks!

Have you ran the serial on Guitar Dater Project? http://www.guitardaterproject.org/fender.aspx

If so what did it say?

E + 6 DIGITS made in Japan Fenders were made from 1984 through 1987 according to the chart here: http://www.guitarsjapan.com/fenderchart.html

If you can adjust the truss rod without removing the neck, great! Sometimes it helps to move the pickguard out of the way.

Was waiting to hear something on the year before giving any sort of price range. So it is a 87 for sure? If so figure $600 to $700 retail near mint to mint with OHSC.

Why do you think I was specifically asking about the exact model year?

The reason is because you asked for a value estimate so I asked for the specific year.

You replied you knew the model year, but then didn't bother to share that info with us.

Next you state you want to know the value which nobody can tell you unless they know the exact year model. Just because you bought it in '87 doesn't make it an '87. It could be an '84.

It is worth nothing to anyone unless they know for sure what year it is.

Brother Dave, to answer your question, I thought you were asking about the exact model year because you have poor reading comprehension skills, or you skipped the second line of my original post. If the phrase "most likely" is confusing you, let's just call it an '87 okay? Deal!

The serial info given could be 84 through 87. The year makes a difference. I gave you a quote for an '87.

Appreciate the quote and neck info, B.D. I bought the bass very early in '87, so I was just leaving a month or two leeway in case it had been for sale for a couple months, but yeah, my serial number research indicates it is in fact an 87 run. Frankly I was surprised the shop in which I purchased it had such a current model.

E Series MIJ is catching up in value. Ebay is sometimes loaded with E Series, not all the time, but E Series in messed up condition still goes for $500 or higher. I have newer E Series - 22 frets, '89 to '92 IIRC - Chromeface might be able to give the years better.

As far as comprehension in reading, not sure about Brother Dave's, but he's our Knowledge Guru around here. For him to be helpful after the insult, shows how great of a person he is.

My brand new custom ordered 51 Reissue P-Bass in sunburst from Japan was over two years old by the time I got it. Don't know where it was sitting, but I ordered it through a Fender dealer. That is why I'm wondering if this "E" series one was maybe an earlier model year. Value is often based on scarity and a year or two or three can make quite a difference.
