Okay that's a trick question. Any one of those basses can be made to sound very close to any one of the others. I can make the P sound close to a J etc.... The cool thing to know starting out is how to set the controls on each of those to get the signature tone of each bass so they can not be mistaken for anything but what they are to begin with. The amp or preamp plays into the sound also. Cool idea for a thread .

Note* The easiest one to pick out would be the Stingray. Just play all four strings on each bass- one at a time, and the one where you can't hear the G string is the Ray.

With all running clean...usually, especially since I own all three.

Okay...

1 - jazz
2 - stingray
3 - P bass

But after a second listen with good headphones I decided
1 Jazz
2 P
3 Stingray

Really tough to tell since I agree...I can get all my basses to sound close because I'm always after my tone. And it actually sounded like it could be three basses in each of the three recordings.

I'd laugh, but I also had that problem with my p bass...but not since switching it to dual EMG PX pickups.

Thanks for checking in guys! I'll be sure to post the official results here when I reveal them. If I get a chance, I'm also going to add another recording of the three basses completely dry with no drum track.

:)

Update: I quickly made a recording of each bass recorded clean into my recording console.

http://soundcloud.com/dub-saint/bass-test-clean

I've also updated my original bass test posting on my blog which can be found here:
http://dubsaint.wordpress.com/2012/06/1 ... ound-test/

The basses all sound pretty "naked" now ... :)

So which is your goto bass. I have similarly good basses. My Select Jazz would be my prize bass, but I also have a classic SR that I enjoy playing as well.

My American Standard Jazz is my workhorse, followed closely by my 60th Precision. I also have another regular StingRay I love as well. The Classic StingRay and 50th Jazz are real lookers and consistently get the most compliments, but they don't "feel" like home to me.

Yeah, my old 99 American Std feels like home to me, even though it feels as if it's a pound heavier than all the rest. My Select is comfy as well, even though the body is slightly bigger because of the flamed maple top. The only thing I don't like about the classic is that it doesn't have a contoured body. Aside from that...nothing. I can play an entire set of classic rock tunes with it, and it'll sound fine in the mix. However, it doesn't have the grit I need for my original punk band though.
