i have a fender precision bass, as far as i know it may be a real fender, the neck is a japan.
the pots show definate age, there is a #2 in the neck pocket in black marker, it has a single pickup like a 51 and bridge like a 51, it is sunburst which may be someone refinished it, if someone could help me identify this bass i surely would appreciate it, the neck is solid maple and has a 'summit' decal on the headstock
my email is tjs7antiques@aol.com i can send pics thanx in advance

Well, This man (Troy) has sent me loads of pics about this Bass, ....Err it aint a Fender but it is certainly the the most unusual Bass i´ve ever seen, It may be a very early copy from Asia, or....Oh hell i aint got a clue on this, If Brother Dave sees the pics I think he may pickup on the bridge and the 2 holes where a Fender bridge cover could have been and the headstock name i have traced to a luthier in Canada I have sent him an e mail and pics asking if it is one of his creations....Peter

I got email from him also with photos. I sent him my evaluation which was that the body was probably from the Philippines. The only thing Fender-esque is the shape of the body and the peghead. It probably said either "Fender" or "Finder" on the headstock of the original neck. That is likely not the original neck. Of all the parts I see absolutely nothing that is Fender or even an outright copy of a Fender part. The body appears to be plywood veneer typical of the Philippine basses. I also think that is possibly the original finish. Nobody in their right mind would waste money or time refinishing one of these, especially in sunburst. These instruments were made to be sold to GI's passing through who didn't know they were junk. They also copied Gibsons so they were equal opportunity forgers. Many of these were crafted using simple hand tools by one or two people at the most working in the hut or "hooch" where they lived. It is amazing really that they came out so well as they were only going by photographs. There were also larger scale mass production facilities, one of which produced the "Finder" knockoffs. The Finder plant also made amps. I think this might actually have been a "FINDER" body because of the routing work but without the original neck it is hard to tell.
