Hi All,

I have a couple of snaps of my P-Bass which I have been using for around 15 years:

It has a beautiful warm sound - I bought it second hand ( to replace a stolen one) and know nothing about it. Can anyone give me any advice from the photos linked?

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

James.

Since you don't know anything about your bass, I will try to be as diplomatic as possible.

I believe that what you have is either a parts bass or bass that was completely refinished and the serial number was either removed from the neck or removed when the neck plate was replaced. the Fender decal is not original and it was poorly applied to the refinished neck. The body does not look like its a Fender body either although it is hard to tell definitively from 4 pictures. The tuning machines appear to be genuine Fender early 70's tuners. I can't tell if the bridge, pickups or knobs are Fender parts.

Many parts basses are excellent instruments and I hope that is the case with your bass.

Thanks BC for your expertise - I appreciate your diplomacy! I guess it must be a parts bass then so - I kind of figured that the neck plate was a replacement alright (is that the only place the serial would be?) - it still plays/sounds great so Im happy to keep plugging away with it.

Cheers,

James.

Serial numbers are usually pretty easy to find in one of a few places; the back of the neck on the headstock, the back of the neck by the pocket etc. No obvious numbers is what really makes the bass seem like a parts bass or a refinish. And if it still kicks $@!, rock out brother. It's great to hear that you prefer the sound and feel over the stick on the 'stock.

James, there are some non-stock parts on it. The brass nut and the neck plate rubber washer are probably not original. The washers were used mainly on FMIC era USA Strats. I'd suggest checking the pot codes and the neck markings (if any survived the neck refinishing) to see if you can more accurately authenticate or date it. You'd have to remove the neck for that.

I'll be as diplomatic as possible. That was a less than ideal refinish job. If it turns out to be genuine Fender, you might consider a professional refinishing by someone who actually knows what they are doing. That headstock decal location is so far off you'd have to wonder if they ever actually saw a Fender bass before.
