I just purchased a new American P-bass. After removing the protective film from the pick guard, a residue of sticky crud remaines. Any thoughts on how best to clean it?

Thank you for your response stroker. I had actually found a solution earlier through a friend of mine who had the same issue with his Jazz Bass... WD-40. Sure enough, right on the side of the can it says, "Effectively cleans most surfaces of: grease, tar and adhesives." Who knew? I carefully removed the pick guard for the procedure. Had to anyway as little pieces of the plastic film were still sticking out from under the nuts that hold the pots and output jack. WD-40 did a great job. Buffed it after with a clean cotton cloth and reinstalled the guard. Kind of a pain to have to do but it turned out nice. :D

I've had guitars that have had that plastic on the guard for years and it leaves permanent marks. Not Good. I bought the guitars like that. I always get rid of it when I get a guitar that has it on there

I bought a Hamer "strat" back in the 90's that had the plastic film on the pick guard. However, it pealed right off without leaving any residue. This is the first time I experienced this situation. But at least I know how to deal with it if it happens again. After all, there are more Fenders out there that I may desire to own...
