Ok, this might be a dumb question:

I want to change out the pick guard on my American Special P Bass, the new guard that just arrived has what looks like a tin foil cover on the bottom side. Will switching out the guards require some technical expertise (like some Strat pick guards do) or is it so simple I can do it at home?

I've also purchased a Badass II to put on it, would it be a better idea to let my tech guy do all of it at once?

Thanks!

Mike

The foil is shielding. You can change it yourself. Remove knobs, remove nuts from pots and jack, remove pickguard screws, remove pickguard and reverse the procedure but tighten the jack and pot nuts first then place new guard and screw it down then replace knobs. Should take 10 minutes or less. Don't put any stress on the wiring at all and try to keep everyone on new guard oriented as on the original guard.

There is no reason you can't do this yourself. I use deep sockets instead of pliers on the pot and jack nuts because they won't slip off and scratch anything. I do NOT use the socket wrench handle, I just use my fingers to tighten them finger-tight. Needle nose pliers will work but if you slip you can leave some nasty marks. The bare socket works great.

The tech can change it out for you, but will probably charge extra to do it.

I'm with BroDave on this one. Seeing someone use pliers on nuts when there are tools made specifically for that job makes my blood boil (I am a mechanical rate in the navy and have more than once blew my top on some of the younger kids doing just that). If you want a good set that won't let you over torque your fasteners, any good tool manufacturer makes stubby wrenches. And as the Obi-Wan of the Fender Forums said, keep things relaxed and don't stretch the wiring. Good luck brother

Thanks guys! I wasn't feeling adventurous enough at the time to pull it apart only to find it was above my abilities to deal with... I especially appreciate the advice of using deep sockets instead of pliers. You wouldn't happen to know the correct size socket off the top of your head?

Thanks again!
