Prior to the American Standard Precision Bass V Fender did an American Deluxe version which featured a humbucking Jazz Bass pickup in the bridge and active electronics. This model is no longer made.

I guess not enough sales to keep that one around.

The thing that has me giving these American Standard P-Bass V's a second look is it's basically a standard passive P-bass, only 5 string. I've always liked the P-bass, but I've been playing a 5 string for so long now it's what I'm most comfortable with. So to me these basses are an interesting combination of what I like.

Just one that's caught my eye, but I haven't read or heard of many first hand reports, so I thought I might ask on this forum. Surely someone out there is playing one.

The AMDP5 was originally available with a standard 4-bolt neck plate, 5-in-line tuner arrangement and a 9V power supply. From 2002 until its discontinuation in 2007 the AMDP5 received an overhaul: the headstock design has been reworked with a 4+1 config and dual Hipshot string guides. Other subtle refinements included an asymmetrical 5-bolt neck plate, a contoured neck heel for better access to the upper registers, an improved Deluxe bridge with nickel plated brass saddles and a new preamp driven by two 9V batteries.

Schaller lightweight tuners were replaced by Lite Bass gears in 2004 while pao ferro was dropped from the second fretboard choice in favor of the more conventional rosewood two years later.

I hope this reply is not to late but.......

I have a 2011 fender American standard 5 string p bass. They are hard to find. I had to have a local fender dealer order it from fender and it took about 2 months to get because fender did not have any in stock.

I love this bass. I also have a deluxe jazz bass which is very bright and sounds great but was just missing that big booming low end. I use it mostly for reggae or harder rock songs. The B string is very clean, no buzz with finger style or pick. The neck is wider than most 5 string basses. Instead of shoving the strings closer together to fit another string like Ibanez does, the string spacing is almost the same as fender 4 strings, so there is enough room between the strings to fit your fingers. But if you have never played a 5 string the wide neck takes some getting used to. I play through a Mesa M Pulse 600 head with a powerhouse 1000 cab with 1 15" and 4 10s". You can feel the bass just as much as you can hear it. I was surprised at how light the bass is. Doesn't weigh more than my 4 string jazz. Very comfortable to play. You can get the action very low. Every gig I have played with it someone asks where the heck did you get a real 5 string p bass?

I do not like my 5 string p bass for slap. It is missing the clean brightness for funky stuff. I go back to the jazz bass or I have a modulus flea bass that sounds amazing for slap.

Overall this is the best 5 string I have ever owned and will never get rid of it.

I'm GASsing for an American Deluxe version of the instrument with a N3 Jazz Bass bridge pickup since they discontinued the MIA Deluxe Precision Bass V in 2007....

I owned a 2006 (60th Anniversary) American Precision Deluxe V (with the humbucker). Beautiful bass, but I didn't care for the sound. It was too modern, the P pickup didn't really sound like a P, and the humbucker was a bit weak sounding. And the B string was just OK. And it was quite heavy.

I also owned a 2008 American Standard P5. Nice but not great vintagey sound, OK B string, kind of heavy.

I just got a 2012 American Standard P5. Totally different animal, alive sounding and very light and resonant, with what looks like a one-piece body. Very nice feeling neck. Incredible B string, best I've ever heard on a Fender, at least as good as my Sadowsky and Nordstrand. I'm going to put a Nordstrand NJ5FS in the bridge position, and this bass will be everything I hoped the Deluxe would be. But with a great passive sound.

The 2012 models seem to be a big step up from the previous years...

For what it is worth- I have played a new American Standard Precision 5 string and I think it is a great bass. It is the classic Precision sound on a 5 string bass.

I played a Sunburst with rosewood neck and a Candy apple red with a maple neck and both were great basses.

I am plotting a way to buy one for myself.
