Just wondering if any of you own or have played an American Standard Precision 5 String?
If so, could you please post a review?

I do like the active Jazz bass, especially the one I have now  , but I've also always liked the passive P-bass.

So I was just wondering if any of you have any first hand knowledge of these basses and what you think of them, good or bad.

Oh, I think the Candy Cola with the maple neck looks pretty good.

Never seen a 5 string Standard, but I've never seen Hawaii either. I have seen a few things.

Seriously, all I could find was an American Standard 5 string, considering what you have already, you would be slumming with an American Standard.

Fender makes these American Standards in 4 different color/neck combos.

In 1992 when I purchased my Jazz Plus V, the local music store was almost the only source for any first hand music info. There were a few catalogs and magazines.

If Fender made a Precision 5 string back then I didn't know about it. The Jazz Plus was a great bass and it served me well, but if the music store would of had a Precision 5 string I probably would have purchased it instead of the Jazz Plus.

I know there's no way the American Standard can match the quality of my current bass, but it's really hard for me to refer using any Fender bass as "slumming".

Some other brand maybe, but not a Fender............never a Fender!

You have an incredible instrument that is way beyond what most of us have, and you're such a humble guy!

I went to a couple different sites and couldn't find them. I Have no problems with my MIM's, of course they need a little extra tweaking but all in all, they sound and play great.

I was just looking at the Head Country website, you are a fortunate man to live where you do!

If I am humble  I owe it to my parents. Great folks. Hard working and honest. Even though they are longer with us, they still guide me in my everyday life.

I do feel lucky to live where I do, Eufaula, Oklahoma. We moved away for about a year once. Couldn't get back here fast enough.

I am fortunate to own the bass I have. Just lucky to be able to afford one. It is a great bass (props to FCS) and I'm still amazed every time I pick it up. We've had a few members of local bands show up at our gigs. I get compliments on my sound, especially from their sound men.

By the way, the band is doing pretty good. We've played 5 gigs locally since we started in March. Each time the club owner tells us we draw more people than anyone else. He also told us that people seem to have more fun and they've had zero problems with the crowd when we play. He's already booked us for New Years!
I guess word is getting out. We've picked up a few out of town gigs. Club owners that didn't want to give us the time of day are all smiles and friendly now.

I was just asking about the P-basses because I've always been a fan of the P-bass sound and now it seems like Fender is making a decent 5 string version. I believe the 2012 models have the CS 60's pup. Like I said, I know it won't match up with the one I have, but I'm betting it's got that great P-bass sound......and it's a 5 string!

Thanks and you do the same.

I look at it this way, we can't always choose where we are and what we have to do.......
.......but we can choose what attitude we have.
I'm only gonna walk this earth one time, so I plan on making it the best that I can. :D

Happy holiday everyone!

P.S. I'ld still like to know if anyone has any experience with the American Standard Precision 5 String. :?:

Ed Friedland's (bassist, music book author, instructor, music equipment reviewer)
His video reviews of the Fender American Standard Precision 5 String...

2nd:

Bass Gear Magazine:
http://www.bassgearmag.com/page/issue/2

All of the new American Standards won the Bass Player Magazine's "Editor's Pick Award" many years ago. They even had a really nice video with all the new basses.

I concur with the positive feedback. I personally have played the AM V P. . I did get to use it on 1 gig, but that was brief and I was dealing as with most rooms the room itself.

I use a (passive) RB V jazz bass and I still to this day long to fill the tonal void of an excellent passive P V. I would even consider stringing it with flats...TBD. As with any bass, even if you are set on the model, check some out in person, do you can pick the best apple. I think you will agree with Fender’s offer, it is a P with an excellent extended contra B.

Thanks contrabassist. The videos were interesting.

How did you like the one you played? How did the neck feel and play compared to a Jazz V?

If I ever run accross one in a local music shop I will check it out. Not planning on buying one, unless I hit the lottery or something.

Hey quit laughin'! It could happen!

Are you referring to buying, or winning? I think your buying one is much more possible than the lottery.

Just for the record, I thought you were talking about Standards (MIM) not American Standards.

From my experience with both Jazz ans Precision necks, the Precisions are wider and flatter, personally I like them better, so much so, I keep thinking about swapping the necks.

I know the P-bass necks are wider than the Jazz on the 4 strings, but I didn't know about the 5 string basses. Thought they might do something a little different like basically use the same neck as a Jazz. I'm comfortable with the necks I've had on the 2 Jazz V basses I've owned, but I'm not sure I would be if they were wider.
I believe the guy in video stated the P-bass V had the same neck radius as the 4 string P-bass. I need to watch the video again to be sure.

It would be nice to have one, but actually the odds of winning the lottery are about the same as me going out and buying one. :(

If you are comparing the Fender American Standard, the neck with the P V is wider than the J V.

I have played it and found it comfortable.

Thanks again contrabassist.
I haven't seen a American Standard Jazz V either, so the only Jazz V necks I know are my previously owned '92 Jazz Plus and the one in my signature. So those are the only ones I would have to compare it to, if I ever get to actually see one.

That's one of the downfalls living in rual eastern Oklahoma. OKC and Tulsa GC's are each about 100+ miles from where I live and there's no guarantee that they'll have one in stock. So if I was seriuosly looking I would definitely call before making the trip.
There are only a couple of small mom & pop music stores within 30-40 miles and they only carry the most popular models.

P.S. oxfan, that "Nice Lady" wouldn't be so nice to me if I went out and bought another bass right now.
