I have one of the MD sigs. Been needing to adjust the truss rod recently (Probably the change in weather) . But whenever anyone mentions these on any of the bass forums (And a few guitar ones) you always get someone mentioning neck problems.

Having had a google I seen a few mentioning they had problems, just a handfull and then the rest seems to be people jumping on the bandwagon. The causes seem to vary from Maxining out the truss rod, inherent manufacturing fault of the neck and the truss rod channel, Soft inferior wood compressing behind the truss nut, fret slots cut too deep.

so what is the story? Just internet bull? Or is there something I should be looking out for when I'm setting the bass up?

I had an MD sig for about 11 months. There isn't anything special about it - just a slightly modified MIM P-Bass with a Quan BA II bridge and a couple other features.

Do you SEE an actual bow or hollow at mid neck and if so, can you see a non-linear ( dips or rises) string to fret spacing from the headstock to the neck pocket? In other words, how far did it drift off of being straight with proper tension on the strings? Also, what is your normal spacing from the underside of your strings to the top of the fret bars at mid-neck ( B on the E string )?

If you can tell us that, then perhaps we can give some pointers.

Mine recently has went from around 2mm to over three at the 12th fret. But we have had a major change in weather. Snow last month. Hail at the beginning of this. And today it was most definitaly sit out in the sun with beer weather.

Measured it today after adjusting it earlier in the week and its crept up a bit.

Not overly worried just read some of these supposed horror stories. Just thought if there was some where to ask without the risk of getting the usual neigh sayers who have heard it from their grannies uncles mothers brothers sons bookie it would be on here.

Personally I don't see the difference from another MIM . BUT if there is a genuine problem to look out for. Always good to have a heads up,see the symptoms and get it sorted before it's too late. 8)

If it's internet rubbish Well I'll just have to keep tweakingthat rod until it settles .

I have not heard of any materials problems in my 49 years of playing Fender basses. American, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian or Mexico made... and I have owned examples from all locations. Just remember to keep the adjustments to around 1/4 turn in either direction at a time... and watch the string tension - I always detune the machines by 1 full turn before adjusting the rod. I then let it settle for 10 to 15 minutes and then retune and check spacings.

Good luck with the project.

Neck problems erupt on all models and makes. Not just Dirnts. If you Google or Dogpile search Jazz or P neck issues you'll probably find more posts about either than the Dirnts.
