Had a Modulus Flea Bass with the Lane poor pickup and active circuitry. Sounded just so gooooood. But its sound wasn't what I was wanting and the Admiral and I made an agreement for me to thin the herd. It went to a good home.

Actives have come a long way, especially in the past five years. Still, for me....nothing beats Alnico pickups in a passive tone circuit with a paper in oil Sprague Vitamin-Q tone cap. Sounds good and RELIABLE. Batteries are a hassle and an expense. Plus there is the environmental consideration. But a few less batteries isn't going to save the planet.

Yes I have an active. ONE active and the rest are all passive. The active I use for very few things but it does sound good to me on those few things.

Funny, but until the early 80's there were no active basses and everyone got along fine. Of course before 1951 there was no electric bass and everyone got along fine. So, in summary...whatever floats your boat. But if I could have ONLY one instrument it would be passive.

Passive. The amplifiers, mixing consoles, or any other quality outboard electronic device for tonal enhancement is going to smoke anything an internal 9 or 18 volt battery powered supply has to offer in regards to headroom and the quality of the equalization.
