hello forum, Im new here..First post.

Im looking at the basses on the Fender website and really didnt know the choices were so many. Im very confused about what I want to get and could use some help. By what I've read, Im looking for a hybrid. I want the low fat bottom end of a P bass but have small hands and would like a J neck. I've been playing a 3/4 scale bass for a long time but want to make the jump to a Fender bass....Does Fender make a bass that has the P body and electronics with a J neck without having to get into the custom shop stuff???

Thanks in advance...

Welcome to the forum and may you find all you need here and more. We love to help where we can.

Now on to the answer part:

They do, in the Duff McKagan signature, cost you about $1000 (American) through MusiciansFriend. Also, if you would like active, the Deluxe Active P is available and would cost about $700 though the same site as above. If you dig through all of the P-bass listings on this site, click on the "Specs" tab below the photo that heads the page and look at nut width. You're looking for 1.625" instead of the P's wider 1.75"

You could accomplish it yourself by buying a P bass you love the sound of and going aftermarket for the Jazz neck. It is a popular mod.

One thing I do have to ask, though, is have you tried out P-basses lately at your local guitar shop of choice? I once thought that playing a P-neck was like playing a the business end of a baseball bat, but after a few years on thinner necks and building up a little bit of fingering speed and all, I returned to a P-bass and found it a JOY to play, and I have short fingers. Not trying to dissuade you from what you want, but just trying to help keep an open mind. How it feels for you is most important. Hope you find what you like.

Oh yeah, and don't discount the Jazz bass line entirely, the Aerodyne Jazz is a Jazz with a P pup in the mid position instead of the J. Can be had for 800 through MusiciansFriend.

And after noodling around some more, I find the Modern Player Series Jaguar bass. I know you wanted the P bass body, but this has the Pickup-neck combo you were looking for.

Hope all this helps!

The Deluxe Active P-Bass Special has all those features with the additional versatility of an active 3-band EQ.

I just got back from my local music store and played the jazz and P side by side for an hour. Both American standards. I really like the sound of the Jazz bass much more than the P. The necks are noticeably different to me also. I think Im going to end up with the American Standard Jazz. Thanks for all the input, I really appreciate it...
