Duck Dunn, the legendary bass player from the Stax studios here in Memphis, Passed away. You could see him in the Blues Brothers movie strokin the P-Bass near as long as he was tall, with a mersham pipe stuck in his mouth. RIP Duck.

He worked with a bunch of artists, including Eric Clapton among others.

WOW! I thought today could'nt get any more of a painfilled holiday untill I learned this, untill I knew what or how to play I just copied his stuff(as much as my newbie fingers and thought process allowed).
When I think of the word"cool"I think of Dunn, when I hear a bass line steaming forward a song at just the right tempo,I think Dunn,He was so cool he rarely needed to even talk, his playing said it all.
I wish I had'nt passed on the Fender Japanese "Duck Dunn"bass,if you find one BUY IT!

Sad day indeed...I love his playing...moreso than Jamerson's.

RIP

Very sad indeed. Watching all the posted videos from the Stax days through the latest ones, he was steady as a rock and so consistent.

As far as who was better, as I went through all the greats, I found that each had a personality of their own, while borrowing from each other at times. While it's pretty obvious who my favorite is, ther are so many that are truly fantastic.

Tonight there is silence where once there was the tempo locking in the pocket groove that not only drove the Memphis sound, but also influenced many players myself included.

The beauty I find in Duck's work isn't that he played a lot of notes, because he obviously didn't.

The beauty is that what he played was almost always perfectly nestled in the core of the work. There was a simplicity there along with a drive that gave a song just what it needed while giving the other players and the vocals a chance to be showcased in a classy and effective manner. This was the result of years of experience playing in a live R&B orchestra that did a wide range of music and showcased different vocalists.

Even on the rare tracks where he was more upfront, like "Dock Of The Bay" he still kept it simple.

Players can do a lot worse for an influence than the Duck. There is a reason he was so popular to work with and part of that was the simplicity of his lines. There was a saying among producers that went precisely like this, "If it runs amok, call the Duck." If you had a project that for whatever reason it seemed hopeless, Duck could come in and fix it in about 10 minutes. It happened over and over. But won't happen again.

The list of players who I count as a major influence is a short list of 3 names. Duck has always been at the top.

Another one of those, "Do you remember when you first heard it?" things. I can remember the first time i heard Green Onions and Time is tight. No, I won't say when because it makes me feel bad that I'm this old.

Saw him with Slowhand at Edinburgh Playhouse. Most of the Blues Brothers band were on stage. Unbelievable performance. RIP DD.

I can't believe I'm just hearing about this. I never hang around the forums anymore. What a loss. When I think good music, I hear a P bass. Duck is a big part of that. Godspeed, sir.
