Did the deluxe active P-Basses have abalone dots on the fretboard? Surely not, though SameDayMusic and ZZounds feature pictures from these basses with abalone-inlaid fretboards.

Even the passive versions were erroneously presented with 22 frets!

Count again. I think there could actually be 22 frets on that passive.

The advertising spiels may be useless sometimes, well OK most of the time they are useless information. However the spec sheets are almost always right. If the spec sheet says the dots are dried bologna then I'd think that they probably are. The problem I have with the spec sheets is that over the years they've become more and more vague to give Fender latitude in materials and parts.

I think the image from the 22-fret passive P-Bass Special is not correct because a 22-fret neck doesn't fit properly on a standard Precision body which accepts 20-fret necks. Some retail outlets such as Praiselandmusic (Vineyard Guitars) did 22-fret basses using standard P and J bodies.

Unfortunately Praiselandmusic closed their website recently and the Vineyard brand died soon afterwards.

Go back to that photo of the Candy Apple Red P/J Special you posted, count the frets. I count 22.

I know what you mean, Dave. But take a closer look at the same bass (not mine) and spot the differences between the two.

It seems that Fender used a template from an American Deluxe neck because they didn't had an exact photo from the maple-neck Special to display. Nice Photoshop job, though
