I really don't see anything here that tells me whether or not it is Fender. It has been refinished I believe and that removed or covered factory markings. I'd be really cautious on this.

You do realize that buying a bass a piece at a time is probably the most expensive way to do it, right?

Hey thanks for the reply, I am looking to make a fretless bass and already have a really nice p-neck. (this is a lot easier to trace as it has a serial no.)

Maybe I should hold fire and look else where?

As far as holding fire goes, the price right now would be about right for a quality but refinished P-body even if of somewhat dubious origin. It looks OK but personally I just can not say for sure it is or is not a Fender body. I can say it appears refinished. A body with the original finish would be worth far more than a refinished one.

The seller mentions dowel holes, which would be present on all Fender bodies through about 1974 when the body shaping process was revised from a manual operation using a template to a machine. These are two small circles about one-quarter inch in diameter which were used for stabilization during the routing process and then filled with walnut plugs cut from a dowel prior to sanding and finishing. These appear in different locations on various Fender models but are usually these are on the back of the body.

Just reviewed the photos again and can confirm that the pickguard is not original to the body which the seller does state. The guard has the notch for the truss rod adjustment which is on the base of the neck, however the body itself isn't notched.

I can not tell from the photo of the back of the body if there is a serial on the neckplate or not. In 1974 there should be a serial on the neckplate. If there isn't a serial there then I have to wonder how the seller knows it is a 1974. He might be using the latest possible date based on the dowel plugs. If there is no serial then the neckplate and body were not born together either.

I'd ask the seller about these points in an eBay message and see what they say. Especially critical is the serial on the neckplate, otherwise how is he dating it?
