Hi, new to the board! Just bought a new sunburst AM standard P bass. It's a 2011 model, being cleared out by Guitar Center, as the '12 models have some changes. My question is.. I see that the new basses now have 60's custom shop pickups. What exactly is the difference between these, and the previous AM standard pups? I'm happy with my bass, and think it sounds great, but I'm just curious why they switched to the c.s. 60's pups, and what the sound difference is. Thanks in advance, looking forward to spending a good bit of time here!

Hi tmorr, Welcome. I've been trying to find out the differences myself. I'm hoping the sound of the CS 60"s pup, is about the same as the Seymour Duncan Basslines SPB-3 Quarter-Pound split-coil Precision Bass pickup, Fender uses on the Roger Waters Precision Bass.
SPB-3 pups do sound great on Precisions.

If anyone actually plays a 2012 P-Bass and compares it to a 2011 P-Bass let's hear about it.

I'm suspecting it has more in common with the Fender Original P-Bass pickup used on the '62 RI than with the Seymour Duncan spb-3 Quarter-Pounder.

I've often wondered what they call the Duncan Quarter-Pounder in Europe since they are on the metric system. Does anyone know? I recall I heard it referred to as the Royale with cheese?

Well, I've answered my own question! :D I was still under the return time with G.C. on the '11, so today, I swapped for a fresh outta the box '12 AM Std. P bass. It does have the CS 60s pickups, and there is a definate improvement. Overall sound is warmer, and definately has that old-school vibe. Kinda close to the '62s, ..but not completely. At any rate, IMO, this is a much better sounding bass than the 2011 I returned. I spoke with a Fender rep on the difference between the 60s CS, and the previous '08-'11 AM Std. pups. He said that the old pickups were a little hotter, and more "aggressive". The CS 60s have a more "vintage" tone. I would say that is an accurate synopsis. The previous pickups certainly weren't bad, but there was always something a bit lacking to me with the AM Std. fender basses. The sound lacked warmth, and seemed to be difficult to nail the "sweet spot" between muddy and too trebly. Not this one. This thing is sweet (3TS, rosewood) and the set up is beautiful out of the box. Great day, I'm stoked!!

Would be interested in knowing what value tone capacitor is in the 2012 Standard. When used with a .05 the Fender Original P-Bass pickup (stock in the '62 Reissue) can range from really bright and airy to a vintage sound. They put a 0.10 in the 62 Reissue which tames the upper mids. I like 'em so I use a .05 with it and it has an unbelievable tonal range for a P-Bass. The tone control actually DOES something!

I have a 2008 American Standard Precision and don't seem to have any trouble getting great tone. I am running it through and Ampeg SVT 6 Pro and two SVT 410 HE cabs. Tone is a very subjective thing so you may be after a different sound than I am.

The 5-string P doesn't have CS 60's pickups.

What type of fretboard...were they both 3tsb? I do agree though...I wasn't a great big fan of the stock pups on the 2008-2011 AM Std P basses. They weren't bad...thought they were a little too bright for the maple fretboard P's that I had.

Rosewood on both, and both are the three tone sunburst. Seems to be the only color Guitar Center is selling these in, at least at my local store. I actually, up until recently, did not care for the sunburst. I always favored the colors, especially Olympic White ( I do wish they made the USA basses in Lake Placid Blue, however, I love that new jade pearl!). The sunburst has really grown on me though, and it is really a very classy (and classic) look. Funny though, I went to another guitar shop the other day, and they had a new '12 AM Std. P in Charcoal Frost with Maple hanging there!! AArrrgghhh!! Oh well, I'm happy with my sunburst. Absolutely agreed that tone certainly is subjective, and there are lots and lots of '08 to '11 Fender basses out there making great music, goes without saying. It's all good. The "old" pups, again, weren't bad by any means. But I think that a lot of people such as raginrog and myself felt the pickups were a bit too bright and perhaps a little too "modern" ( they are pretty bright with rosewood too). Fender, in my opinion, went a step in the right direction to give the basses a little more vintage style warmth, alittle more in line with the traditional aspect of this particular instrument. That said, If you're happy with your tone, whatever your instrument, that's what matters.

Cool...and congrats. 3tsb is a classic look that'll never get old.

Thanks a lot. Likewise with your J bass. I owned an AM Standard J bass, an '09 or '10, and it just never sounded quite "right". I'd love to hear the new pups on the Jazz basses. I briefly owned an AM '62 reissue Jazz, and that thing was sweet. Want another Jazz someday.

had to chime in since i have both cs60s in jazz and p bass, i find the jazz to be more vintage with emphasis in the low, low mid, where the cs60 in the p bass has a nice balance and range with emphasis on hi mids, i have an american special P (honeyburst satin) with more low mid thump than the new cs60 p basses, i posted this observation on talkbass and pother confirm it, and i guess you really have to have cs60s in both jazz and P to know what im talking about..
